chapter 2-The warning

744 Words
The next morning, Elara barely had time to catch her breath before the whispers began. “You’re insane,” hissed her coworker Mira as they stacked trays behind the café counter. “Do you even know who you spoke to last night? Damian Hale. People vanish for less.” Elara tied her apron tighter, pretending to focus on the steaming kettle instead of the way her chest tightened at his name. Damian Hale. Just hearing it again sent a shiver through her. “Relax. It was just a delivery. He probably doesn’t even remember me.” Mira’s eyes widened. “You think that man forgets anything? Elara, he has people investigated for sport. If you spilled his coffee—” “I didn’t spill it,” Elara lied quickly, heat rising to her cheeks. She remembered the papers, the sharp scent of ink, and his eyes boring into hers. The memory made her stomach twist in a way that wasn’t entirely fear. --- Meanwhile, across the city, Damian Hale stood in his private gym, fists wrapped, slamming into the punching bag with unrelenting precision. Sweat dripped down his temple, muscles straining beneath the black fabric of his shirt. But no matter how hard he struck, his mind refused to focus. Maybe I don’t like bowing. The girl’s words replayed, over and over. Defiance. Not arrogance—there was no strategy behind her boldness. It had been raw, reckless honesty. Nobody spoke to him like that. Not partners, not rivals, not even lovers. And the strangest part? Instead of fury, he’d felt… intrigued. Drawn. He slammed his fist into the bag one final time, the chain rattling. His assistant, Marcus, approached cautiously. “Sir, the Tokyo investors are on the line—” “Cancel it.” Damian grabbed a towel, wiping his face. Marcus blinked. “Cancel… Tokyo?” Damian’s eyes narrowed, a silent warning that froze Marcus in place. “Do I need to repeat myself?” “N-no, sir.” --- That evening, Elara finished her shift and walked home through the crowded streets. Her adoptive mother’s voice nagged at her in memory—reminding her of bills, debts, the constant weight of survival. Her shoes pinched, her back ached, but she kept walking until a sleek black car slid to a stop beside her. Her heart leapt into her throat. The tinted window rolled down, revealing a man in a dark suit. His face was unfamiliar, but his expression was stern. “Miss Quinn?” She froze. “…Yes?” “Mr. Hale would like a word.” Her breath caught. “W-what? Now?” The man opened the car door without answering. Panic surged through her. She should run. She should refuse. But something stronger than fear tugged her forward, pulling her into the car. --- Damian was waiting. The backseat of the luxury car was dimly lit, smelling faintly of leather and spice. He sat with one arm resting casually along the seat, his sharp suit molding to his frame. Those storm-grey eyes found her instantly, pinning her like prey. Elara’s voice cracked. “Why… why am I here?” Damian tilted his head, studying her as though she were a puzzle he couldn’t quite solve. “You intrigue me.” Her stomach flipped. “That’s… not a compliment coming from you.” The corner of his lips twitched, almost a smirk. “You’re right. It’s not. It’s a warning.” Her pulse spiked. “A warning?” “You walked into my office. You spilled coffee on contracts worth more than your life. And instead of groveling, you challenged me.” His voice dropped, rich and dangerous. “That doesn’t happen. Ever.” She swallowed hard. “And what do you plan to do about it?” His eyes burned into hers, and for a heartbeat, she thought he might kiss her—claim her right there in the dark. But instead, he leaned back, his voice a velvet threat. “Stay out of my world, Elara Quinn. Because once I let someone in… they don’t get to leave.” --- She stumbled out of the car minutes later, her knees weak, her chest heaving. Damian Hale wasn’t just powerful. He was dangerous. The kind of man who could consume someone whole. And yet, as the car disappeared into the night, Elara couldn’t stop the whisper in her chest. Why do I want him to find me again?
