Chapter Three The First Lie The next morning, Lena woke up smiling. She reached for her phone and found a message waiting for her. Adrian: Good morning, trouble. She smiled. Lena: Good morning, liar. His reply came almost immediately. Adrian: I'm already outside. Lena sat up. Lena: Outside where? Adrian: Your house. Her eyes widened. She rushed out of bed, grabbed her clothes, and hurried downstairs. When she opened the gate, Adrian was leaning against his car with two cups of coffee. “You're crazy,” she said. “I know.” “You came this early just to bring me coffee?” “And breakfast.” She took the cup from him. “You're trying to make me love you more.” “Is it working?” “Maybe.” He smiled. For a few minutes, everything was perfect. Then Adrian's phone rang. He looked at the screen. Mira. His smile disappeared for a moment. Lena noticed. “Who is it?” “Just someone from work.” He declined the call. Lena studied him. “You sure?” “Yeah.” She nodded. She trusted him. That was the problem. --- Later that afternoon, Mira sat across from Adrian in a quiet café. “You didn't tell her?” “Tell her what?” Mira lowered her voice. “About what happened yesterday.” Adrian frowned. “Nothing happened yesterday.” Mira looked surprised. “Are you serious?” “Yes.” She sighed. “I thought you knew.” “Knew what?” Mira pulled out her phone. She showed him a message. Adrian read it. His expression changed. It was a screenshot of a conversation between Lena and an unknown number. The message appeared to show Lena saying: I'm tired of pretending Adrian is enough. Adrian stared at the screen. “Where did you get this?” Mira quickly took the phone back. “I wasn't supposed to show you.” “Answer me.” “I saw it by accident.” Adrian's jaw tightened. “Lena said this?” “I don't know.” Mira looked away. “But if I were you, I'd ask her.” Adrian stood. “Give me the screenshot.” “No.” “Mira.” “I don't want to be involved.” She slipped her phone into her bag. “You should talk to Lena.” Adrian walked away without another word. Mira watched him leave. A tiny smile appeared on her face. The first lie had landed. And Adrian didn't know it yet. --- That evening, Lena waited for him outside the café. When Adrian finally arrived, something was different. “You're quiet,” she said. “I'm tired.” She reached for his hand. He moved it away. Lena froze. “What happened?” “Nothing.” “Adrian.” “I said nothing.” She stared at him. For the first time, she wondered if something was wrong. She just didn't know what. And somewhere across the street, Mira watched them from inside a parked car. She didn't need Adrian to hate Lena. Not yet. She only needed him to doubt her. Because once trust disappeared... Everything else would be easy.
