Chapter Four
Doubt
“Why are you acting strange?”
Lena's voice was quiet.
Adrian kept his eyes on the road.
“I'm not.”
“You are.”
He said nothing.
She watched him for several seconds.
“Did I do something?”
Adrian's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“Why would you ask that?”
“Because you've barely spoken to me since yesterday.”
He finally looked at her.
“Is there something you're not telling me?”
Lena blinked.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“I don't understand.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Of course you don't.”
She stared at him.
“Adrian, what's going on?”
He pulled the car over.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then he looked at her.
“Are you happy with me?”
Lena's expression softened.
“Of course I am.”
“Then why would you say I'm not enough?”
Her face went blank.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“I never said that.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes!”
Adrian pulled out his phone.
He didn't show her the screenshot.
Instead, he watched her reaction.
Lena's eyes filled with confusion.
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
“Think carefully.”
“I am thinking carefully!”
Her voice cracked.
“I love you.”
Adrian looked away.
“That's not an answer.”
“It is the only answer I have.”
Silence filled the car.
Lena wiped her eyes.
“Who told you that?”
Adrian didn't answer.
“Mira?”
His head turned sharply.
“How do you know her?”
Lena frowned.
“She spoke to me once.”
“When?”
“A few days ago.”
“What did she say?”
“I don't remember.”
Adrian stared at her.
That was enough.
Another tiny c***k.
Another reason to doubt her.
---
That night, Lena called Mira.
“What did you tell Adrian?”
Mira sounded confused.
“About what?”
“Don't pretend you don't know.”
“I honestly don't.”
“You've been talking to him.”
Mira laughed softly.
“Lena, Adrian is my friend. Am I not allowed to speak to him?”
“Not when you're trying to create problems between us.”
There was silence.
Then Mira's voice changed.
“You know what your problem is?”
Lena said nothing.
“You think because Adrian loves you, nobody else matters.”
Lena's heart began beating faster.
“What are you talking about?”
“I'm saying you shouldn't be so confident.”
The call ended.
Lena stared at her phone.
Something was wrong.
She could feel it.
But she didn't know how deep it went.
---
The next morning, Adrian found another message.
This time, there was no screenshot.
Just a sentence.
Mira: I didn't want to tell you this, but Lena was with another man last night.
Adrian stared at the message.
His first reaction was anger.
His second was disbelief.
His third was something worse.
Doubt.
He called Lena.
No answer.
He called again.
Still nothing.
Then his phone rang.
Mira.
He answered.
“Where are you?”
“Why?”
“I need to see you.”
Mira smiled on the other end.
“Of course.”
Adrian hung up.
He didn't know it yet...
But every step he took toward Mira was taking him farther away from Lena.
And Lena was about to discover that the person she trusted most was beginning to believe a story that wasn't true.
