I needed to find David and thank him for helping my mother again.
Thinking of him reminded me of our less-than-ideal meeting recently. “Speaking of,” I began, “I ran across David a bit ago.”
“Oh, yes!” My mother’s eyes sparked with joy. “He told me. He also told me you had someone special with you.” She gave me a knowing look that only a mother could give her daughter.
Rebecca shifted uncomfortably in her seat. “You know, I think I’ll wait outside.”
My mother went to stop her, but I gave her a look and shook my head. Rebecca slipped through the door and shut it behind her. A heavy thump indicated she was sitting just outside, her back to the door. It wasn’t necessary, but I understood. Either way, I wouldn’t speak about Ronan while she stood right in front of me.
