Chapter 2: To End the Engagement

1181 Words
Anna stared at Amelia for a long time, puzzled. She couldn't understand which part went wrong. Inside the car at that moment, a specific ringtone suddenly sounded, and it continued for a long time. Anna couldn't bear it any longer. "Millie, answer the call!" Anna reminded her, wondering how she would explain to Thomas. Amelia lowered her gaze. She really needed to exert a lot of effort to control herself and answered with a suppressed voice, "Hi, Thomas." "Did you have fun today?" Thomas's gentle voice came from the other end. Amelia felt it was sarcastic. In a few days, Thomas would participate in an influential outstanding youth selection, so she specially came here to pray for his success. The former Amelia always put Thomas first in everything. Clearly, she had the ability to stand at the pinnacle, but she gave up everything for Thomas. "Millie?" Without a response, his voice became gentler. “Yeah.” Amelia's tone was indifferent as she said, "I went to pray for your career." "Didn't you also pray for having our baby?" He joked. She did. But now, looking at the blessing in front of her, she felt extremely disgusted. Until her death, she only knew that the reason she hadn't conceived for ten years was because Thomas had been secretly putting birth control pills in her food. Ironically, she had endured endless disdain and humiliation from the Marshall family for that. "Are you a bit tired?" Thomas seemed to notice something different about her and quickly asked with concern. "I came to the church early this morning with Anna. I’m indeed a bit tired. We're driving back now." "It's my fault that something came up suddenly today, otherwise I wouldn't have let you exhaust yourself." He sounded remorseful on the other end. Amelia sneered and felt it was ridiculously funny. She used to foolishly believe that he was busy. Actually, he was just busy... sleeping with another woman. "Safe drive," Thomas reminded her. Amelia, however, hung up the phone directly. Looking at Amelia's cold face, Anna held back some words. She felt that Amelia had changed completely. Perhaps after a sleep, Amelia would return to normal tomorrow. The sedan returned to their block, and Amelia first dropped Anna off at the Harris family’s villa. "Anna!" Amelia suddenly called her. Anna turned around, and looked at Amelia’s strange gaze. In fact, Amelia was just confirming that she was really alive. And Anna was also alive. Anna was a little creeped out by Amelia's gaze, "Are you okay today? I heard that Trinity Church is different from other churches for its mysterious power. Are you possessed by a ghost or something?!" Anna was still the silly and innocent woman she used to be. Those earth-shattering events hadn't happened to Anna yet. Amelia grinned. That was the first genuine smile since her rebirth. She said, "Great, you're not dead." "You’re indeed strange!" Anna was speechless, "My dad said that a born optimist like me won’t be easily killed. Such a minor car accident is simply nothing!" Even the former Amelia thought that carefree and easygoing Anna wouldn't die easily, especially not by suicide. However, Anna ended up jumping off the 28th floor, which was a horrifying sight. That was the trauma that Amelia couldn't get rid of in her lifetime. She was very grateful. She was reborn to ten years ago, and everything was just right. Nothing had happened yet, so she could retaliate as much as she wanted! Amelia composed herself and changed the subject, "Don't tell anyone about what happened today." "What?" "My agreement with Samuel." Anna rolled her eyes, "I won't say anything. Besides, you'll be back to normal tomorrow anyway." However, Amelia would only be more determined tomorrow. "I'm leaving." "Safe drive," Anna said, concerned. Amelia nodded and drove the car back home. Back to the Sutton family’s villa from ten years ago. Familiar yet unfamiliar. Emotions flooded uncontrollably in Amelia's heart. She walked into the hall. At the moment she saw her parents, her eyes welled up with tears. If it hadn’t been for her ill-fated encounter in the previous incarnation, her parents wouldn't have died in a car accident. In that premeditated crash, her parents shielded her with their own bodies, so she narrowly escaped death. She didn't want to recall those bloody scenes nor the painful experiences. She refused to go through them again! "Millie, weren't you supposed to go to Trinity Church to pray for Thomas? Why did you come back so soon?" Amelia's mother, Olivia Brooks, greeted her gently. Amelia suppressed the tears in her eyes and smiled as she approached them. From now on, everything would be different. As of this minute, only she would bring about the demise of Thomas and destroy everything related to the Marshall family. No one would dare to harm her family anymore! "Why are your eyes red?" Olivia asked with concern as Amelia approached. "My eyes were a bit dry, so I rubbed them." "Just now, the Marshall family called and wanted to discuss the details of your wedding with us..." Olivia said. Amelia took a deep breath, "Mom, I want to call off the engagement with Thomas." "What?" Olivia was stunned. Sitting next to Olivia, Owen Sutton, Amelia's father, shifted his attention from the newspaper. "Did you have a fight with Thomas?" "No, but Thomas isn’t a good man. He wants to marry me only to seize our family's wealth and use our family as a stepping stone to enter the upper class." Amelia felt her parents' disbelief and continued, "I don't have evidence to prove what I'm saying right now, but give me some time, and I’ll make you believe it!" Owen and Olivia were silent, taken aback by their daughter's sudden determination. Amelia had never been a child who worried them. When she was young, her grandfather arranged for her to be engaged. Amelia didn't refuse, and also remained faithful. She never had any romantic relationships with anyone other than Thomas. She was wholeheartedly devoted to him. And their relationship had been strong since childhood, so why would she suddenly say such things?! Amelia sensed their doubts, "Dad, I have never done anything to make you worry. I also understand the benefits that the marriage alliance between our families can bring. But even so, I must stick to my decision." "You are my daughter, and I trust you." Owen could only go along with her since Amelia had come this far, "However, if we cancel the engagement now, it won’t just deprive the two families of the benefits but also bring significant negative consequences to us. How will the Sutton family survive in New York in the future!" Her father was still slightly dissatisfied. "No, the Marshall will bear all the consequences if I call off the engagement!" Amelia affirmed. Owen was somewhat shocked. He was overwhelmed by his daughter's sudden power. He felt that his usually gentle and soft daughter was different today. "At next month's wedding, only the Marshall family will be humiliated!" Amelia was decisive.
