The First Meeting (3)

Zalia I looked at myself in the mirror for the last time before going downstairs. Today's the day I start high school. I already know it's going to be hell. I have no friends and no one to talk to. It's not like I even know anyone there. I miss home, if I were back in Ghana by now I'd be in the boarding house with my best friend, bathing freezing water, dodging annoying seniors and avoiding horrible cafeteria food. Instead I'm here in New York about to attend a stuffy private schol with children richer than I could ever imagine. Oh the joy. My mother couldn't have married a normal man instead she marries Reid Wilson, CEO of Wilson insurance and a millionaire in his own right. Now instead of going to a normal school I was going to Middleton High which sounds like a public school but is anything but. It's made up of people who are either rich enough to pay the fees, smart enough to earn their almost impossible scholarships or lucky enough to have their parents or some other family member as an alumni of the school. Oh the joy! "Come on honey or we'll be late, you want to make a good first impression." As if I care about impressing anyone. My goal is to be invisible and forgotten. To blend into the background. Which is kind of hard to do when you're the new girl and plus size. I double checked to make sure everything I needed was in my bag. The only thing I liked about my new school was that we didn't have to wear uniforms everyday, just on formal occasions. We did however have to wear school colours, purple and gold. I decided to wear jeans and a purple top and gold sneakers. I looked at myself in the mirror one last time before heading downstairs. "Good morning Zalia, I see you're ready, let's have breakfast and get going." I looked at Reid and gave him a small smile, even though I still didn't like him I could see he was trying. Honestly without his hefty cash donation to the school I don't think I would be able to go there. I still think my mom moved too fast but at least now I know he's not a pervert or a creep. And he seems to adore my mother, I'm not happy here but I've not seen my mom this happy and alive since my dad died. I guess it's okay as long as she's happy. Suck it up and just get it on with, you're not going to be popular anyway. I nibbled on an apple, too nervous to eat breakfast. My mom must have noticed and was about to complain probably but I saw Reid shaking his head at her and she stopped. He's scoring some major points with this. We quickly cleared up the table and we were off. Fifteen minutes later we pulled up at Middleton High. Did I forget to mention it's very close to the apartment. I couldn't think of Reid's house as my home or even my house. I had a home, back in Ghana were my family and friends were. Thinking about them was too sad and I didn't want to cry on my first day so I cleared all thoughts about home from my mind. The car park as huge and i saw a lot of flashy cars, there's no way this is for only the teachers, students here must come from rich families. We followed Reid since he obviously knew where the administration was located. I noticed the school was made up of an interesting mix of bricks, marble and glass. The administration was located a few minutes after the front door, we walked in to see three secretaries all busy on their computers. Reid went to sit in front of one of them and cleared his throat to gain her attention. "Oh Mr. Wilson, sorry for that." The old kind looking woman said with a blush on her face. "Well we're here to get Zalia's class schedule and to pick up her school items, I believe we have to go to the school store for that but first I'll like to get her settled in." "Of course Mr. Wilson, here you go, the principal will also like to see you when you're done here." The old lady said while handing Reid a sheet of paper. "Let's just go in and say hello to him, then we can go." We entered the office and saw a middle aged man looking at some documents so intently he didn't hear the door open up. "Ron! Would you stop obsessing for once and greet your friend." Reid exclaimed while smiling. Obviously they know each other. Seeing the confused look on my face Reid clarified, "Ron and I were classmates in this same school. Oh how time flies, who knew one day he'd be running it?" "Willy, old chap so lovely to see you, I see you brought your beautiful bride with you. And this must be Zalia, I want to welcome you to the school and hope you enjoy your time here." He spoke with a light British accent, he obviously was born there or at least lived there for years. I just smiled in response to his words. "Well we have to go. We'll talk later, we have to have dinner some time." We left the office and I could finally look at my schedule. I had Math, Science, History and French, I was excited to see Art because I really loved painting but of course Physical Ed. just had to ruin it. I'm not really sporty and I don't like exercise. I could already tell it would be hell. "Okay, first we'll go to your locker. It should be right here." Reid said pointing to a random locker and giving me the combination. I opened it and put the books I wouldn't need in it. I had already missed the first period, so I had Math next. "Here's a map of the school, if you're not sure you can ask for help, we're going to pick up the rest of your things, have fun!" My mom gave me a hug before leaving, soon enough they disappeared and I was left alone. A shrill bell rang and the hallways suddenly became flooded with students. I kept my head down and clutched my books. I was walking with my head down and I thought I was doing a great job of being invisible until someone knocked my books on the floor. "Look, it's an elephant, she's from Africa too, how nice." People started laughing and pointing. I felt my eyes burning but refused to shed tears. I looked up to see a gorgeous girl with red hair and an amazing body, next to her was a muscular body and hazel eyes. I seem to have met the power couple on top of the food chain, and I'm already on their hit list. There goes my peace of mind for my entire high school life. They continued laughing as they stepped over my books and went away. I bent down to take my books but a hand beat me to it, looking up I saw a skinny boy with glasses, but he had amazing grey eyes behind them. "Hey, my name is Nigel." He said introducing himself. "Zalia, thanks for your help, you didn't have to." I replied. "Ignore Nolan and Sonia, they're just stupid bullies." He said while smiling. Looking at him I decided he was okay, something told me i could trust him besides I really needed a friend. "Could you please show me the way to room 34B? It's my first day here, I'm new." "Sure, I'm headed there now," taking my schedule he smiled. "It looks like we have the same schedule." Walking beside him we started getting to know each other. It seems I've made a friend.
