SELENE BLINKED AS ALEXANDER lifted his head from hers, the dim spotlight from the hall flickering in her eyes as she attempted to focus. Her lips were still sizzling from the aftermath of their kiss and her palms were wet from her grasping his shirt as her legs were trembling but she would be a fool to acknowledge their kiss as Alexander Christos was bad news with a capital letter 'B', except from your daughter” a voice whispered in her head.
Oh my God! Calliope.
The realization settled over her in the ballroom as she stared at the man trying to disrupt the perfect life she managed to build since she left and she fought to wrestle her composure back.
“That was one hell of a kiss Christos but common sense should have told you that i'm with Jay or has it deserted you alongside your morals?” She questioned in an attempt to conceal the effect of his kiss on her. Six years have passed away and his kisses still turn her brain into mush but she wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of knowing that.
“I can remember vividly that you kissed me back” he replied, not trying to hide his anger and frustration.
She shrugged; “Call it curiosity, i wanted to know what it'll feel like to be kissed by you again”
He said, “And what was your conclusion yineka mou?” With a hint of mockery in his eyes, he added. “That i can still turn you on?”
Selene gritted her teeth, “Don't call me thatʼ
“But you liked me calling you thatʼ
She laughed; “You're so full of yourself Christos, but then you've always been.”
His gaze on her softened, giving way to the boy she met and fell in love with five years ago “I shouldn't have ended things the way i did six years ago, it would h—”
Selene couldn't believe her ears, he was apologizing for ditching her then, for screwing her and marrying another woman. The audacity of this man! Her heart hardened at that, and her eyes turned cold giving nothing about the hurt she felt or is still feeling. “But you did, and it made me realise how stupid i was six years ago, pinning for you, defying my father's orders by meeting with you behind his back. You did me a huge favor Alexander and i can't thank you enough.”
“Was that why you left?ʼ He asked not trying to conceal his anger and hurt, “Why that why you left Aigio and allowed us—ʼ
“Don't—ʼ Selene glared at him, letting him see the hatred lurking in her eyes, “presume that I left Greece because of you or our little fling six years ago”
“Don't belittle what we hadʼ He held her shoulders as his gaze bored into her eyes, “Don't do it”
“Your memories seems to have deserted you, trulyʼ Selene shook him off, “I seem to recall you placing it thereʼ
He seemed uncomfortable “Selene i—”
“There you are!” She smiled and mouthed a thank you to the gods for Jeremy's interruption. “I was starting to think I've been ditched” He said, not noticing the tension simmering between the two of them and if he did, then he did a good job by hiding it reminding selene of his reputation in being a good poker player.
“Mr Christos was just saying goodbye” Selene said, glaring defiantly at Alexander, daring him to do otherwise but instead he nodded and clapped Jeremy at the back and then gave Selene a final look that says “this isn't over” then turned and walked away.
“What's the deal with Christos.” Jeremy asked as he walked Selene to their table.
She hissed, “He's Calliope's dad.” At Jeremy's scowl she added. “We go way back, like we were lovers six years ago, despite the bad blood between our families and then one day he ditched me for another woman.”
“Asshole.”
She shrugged it off even though her heart was breaking at the remembrance of that day. “At least he left me with Calli. she filled the hollow that Alexander left and more, i love my daughter so much.”
He halted her and stared down at her, his gaze on her softened as he said. “I know you do, that's why you have to tell him about her even though he does not deserve it.”
Seriously what's with Jeremy and Rose?
But Selene shook her head, “Jay i—.”
“shhhhhh” He put his fingers on her lips. “Let it go for now, but promise me you'll think about telling him right?”
More promises!
She nodded, “Okay” and continued regretfully, “I hate that i spoilt this night for you.”
“Are you kidding?” He chuckled. “I got one of the most beautiful woman to tell me her biggest secret.”
“One of the?” She teased and added amusedly. “And here i am thinking that i'm number one.”
He smiled, looking every inch of the golden boy the media painted him to be. “You know number one”
In an incredulous tone she said. “Rose! I knew something was going on between you two”
“Hey! Nothing is going on, I just said she's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.”
“Right” Her grey eyes darkened with mischief. “You just woke up in the morning and decided that she is. Typical Jay”
“You're not……” He laughed, “You're enjoying this, aren't you?”
She frowned, “No—” Then at his raised brows, she added impishly. “Okay, i am because it's the first time I've seen you get smitten by a woman and not just any woman, my best friend.”
She walked in front of him, looking as serious as ever, “Rose needs someone who'll make her bloom again, be patient with her, don't rush her and she'll come around.”
“Thanks, but i can't help wondering if this advice is for me or for you.”
“Trust me Jay, Alexander Christos is old news to me”
He turned to his left and muttered; “I hope he feels the same way too, because he's glaring daggers at me.”
