Chapter 11 - The Honeymoon Trap

387 Words
"Business trip." Alexander said, tossing his suitcase. "Bali." I looked at the ticket. `Mr. & Mrs. Virel. Honeymoon Suite.` "Honeymoon?" I choked. "But we just signed the contract renewal-" "The board demanded it." He cut me off. "Photos. Proof. That we're a real couple." Right. Proof. The flight was 4 hours of silence. In Bali, the resort was insane. Beach front. Private pool. And one villa. One bed. King size. With rose petals. "Of course." I muttered. Alexander heard me. "Problem?" "No. Just wondering which rule we're breaking this time." He stopped. "Rule 2. Stay away in private." He looked at the bed. Then at me. "Guess it's suspended for the trip." Night 1. I slept on the edge. He slept on the other edge. A whole foot of space between us. But I could feel him. At 2AM, a storm hit. Thunder. Rain. The power went out. "Alexander?" "I'm here." His voice was close. Too close. A flash of lightning. He was sitting on the floor beside the bed. "You okay?" he asked. "No. I hate storms." A pause. Then the bed dipped. He got in. On top of the covers. Far from me. "Go to sleep." I did. When I woke up, my head was on his chest. His arm was around me. And he was still asleep. I didn't move. For an hour. "Caught you." His voice was rough with sleep. I froze. "I- I didn't-" "It's fine." He sat up. Ran a hand through his hair. "Just don't tell the board." Breakfast on the beach. Photographers everywhere. "Kiss her." The PR manager said. "For the company Instagram." Alexander looked at me. Question in his eyes. I nodded once. His hand came up. Cupped my face. And he kissed me. Soft. Slow. In front of the ocean. In front of cameras. Not like Paris. Not desperate. This one... felt real. When he pulled back, the cameras were clicking. But all I could hear was my heart. That night, back in the villa, he stood at the balcony. "Alexander?" "Don't." He said. "Don't make this harder than it already is." "Make what harder?" He turned. Eyes tired. "Us." Us. The word hung between us. And for the first time in 1 year... I wondered if this contract... was turning into something neither of us planned.
