Chapter-Three: A Quick Street and an Unwelcome Pull

1445 Words
Cassian arrived at Liora Hale’s neighborhood just before noon. The sky carried a soft gray light that made the streets look washed out, as if the day itself lacked conviction. The car rolled to a stop at the corner, and he stepped out with the same controlled presence that made people straighten their backs without knowing why. It was not the kind of area he normally visited. The buildings were modest and pressed close together, each one shaped by use rather than luxury. The air smelled faintly of baked bread from a small shop and fresh laundry from a balcony above. It was simple. Ordinary. Nothing about him belonged here. Mako lowered the window from the driver’s seat. "Sir, do you want me to wait?" "Yes." Cassian started down the pavement with slow, deliberate steps. He had the address. He had the timeline. He had the footage of her leaving this street in the early hours of the morning after the betrayal she never deserved. He knew she had not returned home yet. Neighbors noted she ran out with tears in her eyes, and her fiancé, Kael Reddin, did not chase her. That alone told Cassian everything he needed to know about the man. He approached the building entrance. The door had peeling paint. The handle was loose. A small potted plant sat dying on the steps, forgotten. He studied the space for a moment, imagining her living here. A place that held too many memories with the wrong person. This did not suit her. He felt that without even trying to justify it. He climbed the stairs to the second floor. Her hallway was quiet, except for a flicker of light coming from a neighbor’s television behind a thin wall. He stopped in front of Liora’s door and scanned the frame. No sound inside. No movement. No presence. She was not here. He lifted his hand to knock anyway, not because he expected an answer, but because something inside him wanted to mark the moment. It felt strange, standing outside her home. She had walked away from him with such quiet finality, yet here he was, crossing lines for reasons he did not fully understand. He knocked once. Nothing. He waited, then knocked again. The silence pressed back. He stepped aside slightly as a door down the hall cracked open. A middle aged woman with rolled sleeves peeked out. She studied him cautiously, then blinked as if she recognized him from somewhere she had no business recognizing him from. "Can I help you?" she asked carefully. He nodded once. "I am looking for Liora Hale." Her eyes widened a little. "She did not come home last night." "I know." The woman hesitated, then stepped out fully. "She looked sad when she left. She had a small bag of groceries earlier in the evening, then left again after something must have happened. She walked fast, like she needed to leave the whole world behind." Cassian’s jaw tightened. "Did her fiancé look for her?" The woman snorted softly. "That one? He did not leave the apartment at all. He had someone inside. They made enough noise for the whole building to know." A cold anger settled deep in Cassian’s chest. "I see." The woman crossed her arms, shifting her weight. "I do not know where she went, but she has a friend. A girl who visits often. Slim, short twists, always carrying a bag of books. She might know." "Her name?" "Marin. Lives two streets away. Near the old bakery." Cassian gave a short nod of thanks and turned to leave. He took the stairs with a steady pace, each step sharpened by a rising determination he no longer tried to dismiss. When he reached the street again, he paused, letting the quiet fill him. He felt it now. The pull. The need to bring her back into his line of sight. It was not an obsession. It was not a habit. It was something deeper, lodged under his ribs after one night. He moved toward the car. While he crossed the street, inside Marin’s apartment, Liora woke from a light, uneasy sleep on the couch. Her head throbbed faintly, and her body felt heavy, as if she had been running through her own dreams. Marin sat at the table, tapping on her laptop. "You are awake," she said softly. Liora rubbed her eyes. "How long was I out?" "A few hours. You needed it." Liora sat up and reached for her bag, but her hand paused mid motion. That same unfamiliar pull of nausea rolled through her. She closed her eyes until it passed. Marin noticed. "Are you sure you are alright?" "I think so," Liora said. "My stomach is just strange today." Marin studied her quietly. "You want something light to eat?" "No. I am not hungry." Her voice wavered. Her hand drifted to her stomach again. She tried not to think about the possibility forming at the edge of her mind. It felt too soon. Too unreal. She stood slowly. "I need some air." "You want me to come with you?" "No. I just need a small walk. I will not go far." Marin hesitated but nodded. "Be careful." Liora stepped into the hallway, pulled her cardigan tight around her, and breathed in the cool afternoon air. She walked without direction, letting her feet choose the path. Each step felt both grounding and frightening. Her thoughts kept moving back to last night. Cassian’s hands. His voice. The quiet safety she felt in his presence, mixed with a heat she still felt in her skin. She had walked away because she feared waking up in a world she did not recognize. Now she feared something else entirely. She turned a corner, her gaze lowered, her mind tangled with too many questions. Cassian’s car rolled past the old bakery at that exact moment. He spotted a familiar shape walking alone near the row of trees. His heart tightened. He leaned forward, confirming what he saw. Liora. He spoke quietly. "Stop the car." Mako slowed at once. Cassian opened the door and stepped out, closing it behind him with a soft click. His eyes stayed on her. She walked slowly, not noticing him yet, her hand pressed lightly against her stomach. Something inside him sharpened at the sight. He began to walk toward her. Liora lifted her head at the sound of approaching footsteps. Her eyes widened when she saw who it was. Her breath caught in her throat. She took a small step back without meaning to. Cassian stopped a few feet from her, his gaze steady, unreadable, intense. "You left without a word," he said quietly. She swallowed. "I did not think you would care." "I do." The simple truth in his voice shook her. She stared at him, struggling not to feel everything she felt last night. "I should not have gone with you." "Yet you did." Her breath trembled. "I was not thinking clearly." "Are you thinking clearly now?" She looked away, her chest tightening. "I do not know." Cassian stepped closer, slow and controlled, giving her space to move if she wanted. "I am not here to pressure you. I am here because last night was not something I plan to forget." Her voice was barely a whisper. "You were not supposed to find me." His expression held a steady calm that made her knees weak. "I find what I want to find." Her pulse jumped. "Why me?" He studied her with a focus that felt like he was learning her face. "I do not know yet. But I know I am not done with you." She took a breath, but it caught halfway. Her stomach tightened again. Her hand pressed against it, and the move did not escape his eyes. He frowned. "You are unwell." "No. I am fine." "Liora." She looked up at him, and for a moment she saw concern there, real and unguarded. "I am just tired," she said. He stepped closer again, and she did not move away this time. "Come with me." "I cannot." "Then let me walk with you." Her resolve thinned. The exhaustion, the confusion, the ache in her chest, the fear forming quietly inside her, all weighed down at once. She nodded. Cassian walked beside her, his presence steady and protective in a way she did not know how to accept. She tried to keep her breathing steady, but the truth inside her grew louder with each step. She suspected. He sensed. Neither of them said it. But the space between them held the beginning of a truth that would change everything.
