“He must be assigned out of Myrtle, working a separate case,” he suggested. “I guess Jack stole until his luck ran out. Did Prevenas say if anyone thought the earlier burglary was connected to my father’s death?” She answered no and noted that Prevenas had specifically stated that the police had no reason to believe that. “Was it hard seeing your father?” she blurted out, as if she had been weighing the question in her mind for some time. “At the coroner’s office?” He hesitated before answering. “A bit, I guess. Not as hard as I would have thought. It was like looking at a stranger.” “When I heard that he had a son who was coming out for his body, I couldn’t stop thinking about what it would be like for you to see him that way—after so many years.” “That’s something you thought about?”
