Something New

The sun had begun its slow descent, casting a warm golden glow over the school grounds. It was quieter now. Most students had already left, their voices fading into the distance, leaving behind only the occasional sound of footsteps and distant chatter. Maxine stood just outside the gates, her bag resting lightly on her shoulder. Beside her— Lucien. The air between them was calm. Comfortable. Not forced. “I guess this is where we part ways,” Lucien said, glancing down the road briefly before looking back at her. Maxine nodded. “Yeah. My brother should be here soon.” A small pause followed. Not awkward. Just… unhurried. “Thank you,” Lucien said again, his tone quieter this time. “For today.” Maxine looked at him, a genuine smile forming—soft, unguarded. “You’ve said that already.” “I know,” he replied. “I meant it both times.” She let out a small laugh. And for once— It wasn’t measured. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Lucien.” He held her gaze for a moment. “Tomorrow.” Just then, a sleek black car pulled up smoothly in front of the gate. Connor. Maxine glanced back, then returned her attention to Lucien. “Bye.” She gave a small wave before turning and walking toward the car. Lucien watched her go. Something about her stayed with him. Maxine slipped into the passenger seat, closing the door softly. Connor didn’t start the car immediately. Instead— He looked at her. Really looked at her. “…Okay,” he said slowly. “What happened?” Maxine blinked, caught off guard. “What do you mean?” Connor leaned back slightly, a teasing smile forming. “You’re smiling.” “I always smile.” “Not like this,” he countered. “This is new.” Maxine tried to look away, but the smile lingered. “I just had a good day.” Connor raised an eyebrow. “Mhm. And does this ‘good day’ have a name?” Maxine rolled her eyes instantly. “Connor.” “I’m just asking.” “It’s nothing,” she said quickly. “He’s just new. I showed him around, that’s all.” Connor let out a low chuckle. “Right. Just new.” Maxine sighed, but there was no real annoyance in it. “He’s… normal,” she said after a moment. Connor glanced at her briefly. “Normal?” She nodded, looking out the window as the car finally pulled away. “Yeah. No pretending. No… hidden attitude. Just real.” Connor’s expression softened slightly. “…That’s rare for you, isn’t it?” Maxine didn’t answer immediately. Then— “Yeah.” The rest of the drive passed with ease. Maxine told him about her classes, the teachers, how the day went—simple things, nothing exaggerated. Connor listened, occasionally adding a comment or teasing her lightly, but mostly just… letting her talk. It wasn’t often she did. By the time they reached home, the sky had begun to deepen into evening. The villa stood quietly, bathed in soft golden light. Maxine stepped out of the car, smoothing her skirt slightly before heading inside. “Don’t stay up too late,” Connor called after her. She glanced back with a small smile. “You too.” The moment she stepped in— Warmth greeted her. “Maxine!” Her mother’s voice carried from the living room. Maxine walked in just in time to be pulled into a gentle embrace. “Welcome home,” her mother said softly. Maxine smiled, wrapping her arms around her briefly before pulling back and placing a light peck on her cheek. “Hi, Mom.” Her mother held her at arm’s length, studying her face. “How was your day?” Maxine’s smile returned—easy, natural. “It was good. Really good.” Her mother’s expression brightened. “I’m glad.” Maxine turned slightly as she noticed Selene nearby. “Good evening,” she said politely. Selene inclined her head. “Welcome back, Maxine.” For a brief second— Their eyes met. Selene noticed it too. The difference. The lightness. Maxine didn’t linger. “I’m going to change,” she said, already heading toward the stairs. “Alright,” her mother called. “Dinner soon.” Maxine nodded, making her way up to her room. Once inside, she closed the door behind her and let out a quiet breath. The room was the same. Everything in its place. Everything familiar. But she wasn’t. Not entirely. She moved toward her wardrobe, slipping out of her uniform and into something more comfortable—soft, simple, relaxed. Then she paused. Just for a moment. A faint smile returned to her lips. Unforced. Unusual. “…Lucien,” she murmured softly. For the first time in a long while— Something felt different.
