CHAPTER 5: UNKNOWN

303 Words
My eyes slowly opened, almost like I had weights on my eyelids. My limbs felt numb, almost not even there at all. I was on my back, staring at the canopy of trees in front of me. Once I regained enough strength, I sat up and took in my surroundings. The last thing I remember was watching the crowd gather for the burning of the so-called “witch.” Did I miss it?     Gathering my thoughts, I sat up and saw the woman still alive on the stake. She was wearing odd looking clothing. I’m no expert in women’s garments, but why does her shirt have Adidas on it? What is Adidas? I am more lost than the zozzled bimbo I met last week.      I touched my forehead, and I felt a scab of some sort. When I looked at my hand there was a bit of dried blood on the fingertips. I don’t remember hitting my head, then again I get hurt all the time. But there was something about it, almost like something happened but I just, I just cannot remember for the life of me.     The moon, in all its glory, was still high in the sky. As I contemplate my next steps, I see a crowd forming in the open field. Coming out of the north end of the forest line, was the knucklehead McCullian. He owns a few plantations and thinks he runs the show. I mean, he does own half the town so maybe, maybe he does.     I feel like, well I don’t know but, I feel like I know her. The girl. Her soft features glowing in the moonlight, her dark skin contrasting with the moonlight above. There was no question she was beautiful. But I just feel like I know her.
