Chapter 8 — The Man in the Shadows

1556 Words
That same night “ELARA!” Adrian’s voice tore through the darkness. Elara ran. Her boots struck the wooden floor as she raced between the library shelves, the photograph still clutched tightly in her trembling hand. “Adrian!” She saw him near the far end of the library, standing beside one of the old doors. His black coat was open, his dark hair slightly dishevelled, and his grey eyes searched the shadows behind her. Then he saw the photograph. His expression changed immediately. “What happened?” “Someone left this for me.” She held it out. Adrian took it. The moment he read the words written across the back, his jaw tightened. **YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT HIM ALONE.** His eyes lifted slowly. “Where did you find this?” “Under the hidden door.” “You went back?” “No.” Her voice shook. “I was still there when you left.” Adrian looked toward the dark library. “Did you see anyone?” “No.” “Did you hear anything?” Elara swallowed. “A whisper.” His eyes sharpened. “What did it say?” “My name.” Adrian went completely still. For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he reached for her hand. “Come with me.” She didn't move. “Where?” “Somewhere safe.” “Adrian, I need answers.” “You’ll get them.” “When?” His grey eyes locked onto hers. “When I know I can tell you without putting you in a grave.” The words silenced her. He tightened his fingers around hers. This time, Elara let him. They walked through the dark library together. Neither spoke. But Adrian never let go of her hand. --- **Several minutes later** They reached Adrian’s office. He unlocked the door, pulled Elara inside, and immediately locked it again. Then he checked the windows. The blinds. The hallway. Only when he was satisfied did he turn toward her. Elara stood beside his desk, still holding the photograph. Adrian removed his soaked black coat and placed it over the back of a chair. Underneath, he wore a fitted black shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. Elara tried not to look. She failed. His eyes caught hers. “You’re staring.” Heat rushed into her face. “I was thinking.” “About?” She hesitated. “You.” For once, Adrian had no immediate answer. Something changed in his expression. Something warmer. Something dangerous. Elara looked away. “Forget I said that.” “I don’t think I can.” Her heart skipped. Adrian walked toward her. He stopped only a step away. “There’s something you need to understand.” Elara looked up. “Lydia wasn't the only person who disappeared.” Her stomach dropped. “What?” “There were three.” “Three students?” “Yes.” “Who?” “Lydia Blackthorne. Thomas Reed. And Daniel Blackthorne.” Elara stared at him. “Daniel Blackthorne?” “The Blackthorne family founded this university.” She remembered the name. The building. The old portraits. The history surrounding the university. “Why have I never heard about them?” “Because their names were removed.” “By whom?” Adrian’s expression hardened. “The Ravens.” Elara’s heart sank. “Mira told me about them.” “She told you too much.” “Who are they?” “A group of six families with enough money and influence to make almost anything disappear.” “People?” Adrian didn’t answer immediately. Then— “Yes.” A chill ran through her. “Lydia was one of the people they made disappear?” “She tried to expose them.” “And Thomas and Daniel?” “They knew something.” “What?” Adrian looked away. “I’m still trying to find out.” Elara stared at him. “You’re lying.” His eyes returned to hers. “Yes.” The honesty caught her off guard. “About what?” “I know more than I’ve told you.” Her voice softened. “Then tell me.” Adrian looked toward the window. “When Lydia disappeared, I tried to find her.” “And?” “I found her.” Elara’s breath caught. “You found her?” He nodded. “But she was already dead.” She covered her mouth. Adrian’s expression darkened. “And I wasn’t alone when I found her.” Elara remembered the photograph from the hidden room. The scratched-out face. “The man.” Adrian said nothing. “The man standing behind you and Lydia.” His jaw tightened. “I don't know his name.” “You expect me to believe that?” “No.” He turned toward her. “I expect you to understand that some truths are dangerous even when you know them.” Elara stepped closer. “Then why keep protecting me?” Adrian’s expression softened. “Because I failed to protect Lydia.” The words were barely audible. Elara looked at him differently. For the first time, she saw the guilt he'd been carrying. She stepped closer. “Adrian…” His eyes met hers. Neither moved. Then his hand lifted. His fingers gently touched her cheek. Elara’s breath caught. His thumb brushed lightly beneath her eye. “You need to stay away from me.” Her heart tightened. “Then why do you keep coming closer?” His hand stilled. For a moment, his control slipped. “Because I don't know how to stay away.” Elara’s pulse raced. He leaned closer. Not enough to kiss her. Just enough for her to feel his breath. Then— **Knock. Knock.** They both froze. Adrian immediately stepped away. His expression turned cold. “Who is it?” No answer. Another knock. Three slow taps. Adrian’s face went pale. Elara frowned. “What?” “That knock.” “What about it?” “I know who uses it.” “Who?” Adrian stared at the door. Then came three more knocks. **Knock.** **Knock.** **Knock.** Elara grabbed his arm. “Don't.” His eyes dropped to her hand. Then lifted to her face. “You’re learning.” “Learning what?” “To be afraid at the right time.” He gently removed her hand from his arm. Then he reached for the handle. Adrian opened the door. Nobody stood in the hallway. Only a black envelope lay on the floor. A silver raven was stamped across the front. Adrian stared at it. Then slowly bent down and picked it up. He opened the envelope. Inside was a single sheet of paper. His eyes moved across the words. Then stopped. “Adrian?” He didn't answer. Elara stepped closer. “What does it say?” Slowly, he turned the paper toward her. Her blood ran cold. There were only seven words. **WE KNOW WHAT YOU DID TO LYDIA.** Elara looked at him. “What did you do?” Adrian’s face went completely still. “I didn't kill Lydia.” “I know.” His eyes narrowed. “You don't.” “I believe you.” Something in his expression cracked. “But you don't understand,” he whispered. “Then make me understand.” He looked down at the letter. “Years ago, Lydia asked me for help.” “With what?” “The Ravens.” Elara’s heart pounded. “What did she find?” Adrian looked toward the dark hallway. “She found something they were willing to kill for.” “What?” “I never found out.” “You just said you found her.” “I found her after they were finished with her.” Elara’s eyes filled with tears. “Why didn't you tell anyone?” His expression twisted with guilt. “Because I was afraid.” “Of the Ravens?” “Yes.” “And now?” Adrian looked directly into her eyes. “Now I'm afraid for you.” A loud crash suddenly exploded somewhere in the hallway. Elara jumped. The office lights went out. Darkness swallowed the room. “Adrian?” His hand found hers immediately. He pulled her behind him. “Stay close.” His fingers locked around hers. Elara could hear his breathing. Controlled. Steady. But his grip told her the truth. He was afraid too. Another sound came from outside. A slow scrape against the office door. Then silence. Adrian whispered, “Whatever happens, don't let go.” The handle moved. Once. Twice. Elara held her breath. The door began to open. Adrian stepped forward, placing himself between Elara and the doorway. A shadow appeared beneath the opening. Tall. Still. Watching them. Then a man's voice came from the darkness. “You should have left the girl alone, Professor.” Adrian’s grip tightened around Elara’s hand. His grey eyes hardened. “Run.” The door slammed open. And the lights came back on. Nobody was there. Only another black envelope lay inside the office. Adrian stared at it. Then at Elara. For the first time, she understood. This wasn't just a warning anymore. Someone had entered their game. And they knew exactly where to find them. **End of Chapter 8**
