11 A cacophony of noises greeted me as I woke. I groaned. My whole body felt like it’d been crushed for a day or two. At least there weren’t any sharp pains. I likely hadn’t broken anything then. With a great deal of reluctance, I opened my eyes, annoyed to find them far drier than they should be. Glancing around, it took me a moment to realise that Mama wouldn’t actually be here. That she’d been a figment of my concussed imagination. A rumble of sadness travelled through me, threatening to break me apart into dozens of little pieces all over again. “You’re awake,” a relieved voice said. Carefully, I turned my head to the side.
