William headed to his family's house. As he drove he couldn’t help but speculate what the surprise could be.
His mother was always fond of introducing him to numerous women that she thought could be a suitable wife for him, but he was never interested in them.
As he drove through the familiar driveway and parked his car, a flood of memories rushed into his mind. Thoughts of his late father overwhelmed him, reminding him of the special bond they had shared as father and son.
He stepped into the house,“William!” Emily exclaimed happily as she hugged her son.
She was happy to see him as he had not been home for close to 3 months.
“Mum” William hugged her back.
“Where’s the surprise?” he said eagerly.
“You don’t seem happy to see me.”
“You know that’s not true” William said, trying to hide his laugher.
“Oh now, you think it’s funny” Emily said, playfully hitting his hand.
“Can I join in the fun?” A lady dressed in a fitted black gown holding her waist came cat walking towards them while raising an eyebrow and chuckling.
William looked at his mum as if expecting an explanation.
“Oh son, this Alice, Alice Davidson” Emily said, as if reading her son’s mind.
“Nice to finally meet you Will”, Alice said, stretching her hand for a handshake.
William glanced at her a bit before shaking her briefly.
“Dinner’s set,” the butler interrupted.
“Oh great” Emily said and gestured her son to the dining table.”
William wasn’t surprised, he knew his mother. This was the only thing she could have done for a ‘surprise’
He was reluctant at first, trying to escape dinner and run out of the house, but he knew his mum would talk about how he didn't love her every day and he wasn’t ready for all that.
They all settled in the dining for dinner
“So Alice, my son would like to take you for dinner sometime” Emily said, breaking the awkward silent
“Mum!” William said, almost raising his voice.
“That’s fine Mrs John..”
“I mean I only came here because my father forced me to”, Alice continued.
William looked at his mum expecting disappointment.
“Can I talk to you in private for a minute William”, Emily asked, as she left the table for an inner room while William followed suit
“Your grandfather's sickness is getting worse, you know what you have to do.”
“The pressure is killing me, mum.”
“Look, Alice is a nice girl. I have known her father since college. Just try, get to know her..”
“I have a fiancé”, William said, cutting his mum short.
“Really?!”
William knew he was lying, he was lying to his mother.
He doesn’t even go past a one-night stand with any girl not to talk about having a fiancé.”
He nodded slightly, avoiding eye contact with his mum.
“Oh well then, when are you going to introduce her to me” she said, giving a little dance happily
“We have a wedding to plan. I should call your grandfather.”
‘I am in trouble’, William thought to himself.
“Bring her home, Will, for dinner this week.”
“Don’t make me come to your house, because if I do, I won’t leave until I meet her”, Emily continued.
“Is that a threat mum,” William said, letting out a sarcastic laugh
“Whatever you think”
Emily walked back to the table to continue her dinner.
William couldn’t stand them and left.
“Where do you think you’re going?,” Emily shouted. Without looking back, William left the house,he went straight to a nearby bar to clear his head.
As Hannah walked towards the door, a gentle touch on her shoulder sent shivers down her spine, causing her to tremble head to toe, the pain in her knee suddenly vanished. She feared Miss Titt had caught her. As she slowly turned around, she heard a voice.
"Hey Miss?" the stranger asked.
Hannah looked up, slightly flustered. "Who are you?" she inquired cautiously.
“Why are you sneaking inside?”, he muttered out of curiosity.
“How is that your business?”, “can’t you see I work here?”
I didn’t notice, I thought there was an entrance here. It has been a long time since I last came here.He left her standing and went to the other side and entered inside.
Hannah was dumbfounded, she was confused about what had just happened. At least she was safe.
He entered the bar and sat in a corner looking round. He later noticed the lady he meant was at the bar stand. He went straight there, and noticed she was laughing at herself.
“Care to share the joke” he said while sitting on the stool.
“It’s nothing, you again”!!, “what would you like sir”? she asked furiously.
“You sure it’s nothing?” He asked. Hannah nodded yes.
“I would like a glass of whiskey please.”
William couldn’t care less about what she was laughing about, he had better issues to worry about.
“Get me another glass” he asked after gulping down the first one at once.
Hannah raised an eyebrow but she obliged, pouring him another glass. She could tell already that he was one of those rich guys who probably had unimportant issues. Definitely not as serious as hers.
They could easily just come in to seek solace in a bar with expensive drinks.
She really wished she could share her own issues with someone.
“Hello there” William said, snapping his fingers at Hannah, interrupting her thoughts.
“I have been talking to you, you aren’t paying attention.”
“Oh sorry”
“Where’s your head at? Aren’t you supposed to be focused on work?”
William said, almost raising his voice.
“I am sorry, what can I do for you?”
“You are not serious with your work. Maybe quit. Maybe do something else that will keep you entertained since you like laughing”, William talked rudely as if he was already drunk.
“Excuse me?. Well, sorry, maybe because people have real life issues”. Hannah found herself almost in tears.
“You want to know what I was laughing about?”
“I was laughing about my little joke of going to rob a bank because I need money to pick life over death for my mother” Hannah continued, already sobbing and raising her voice.
She left the bar knowing well that her job was at stake. Well, now someone had pissed her off and she was only human.William tried to follow her out, but she had run off.
