2013 Words

Pax was still holding the boy’s hand. She awkwardly released hers from his grasp and looked away. The boy turned his back to her and made his way out of the shadows to peer around the front of the house. Not knowing what else to do, Pax followed him. He nodded to her, signaling it was safe to come out of hiding and lead her into the village. They walked along an unpaved path with little cottage-like homes stretching for miles on either side. The houses looked as if they had been hand-built with wood and large red clay bricks. The path was empty aside from a few children chasing after a ball in the opposite direction. Pax heaved a sigh of relief as they traveled farther down the dusty path. Toward what, Pax was unsure, but at least they weren’t being chased anymore. “So, um, what was that
