Episode 10 (part 1): The Locked Layer

878 Words
The city looked different at night when you knew too much. Amara realized that as the car moved through empty streets. Same roads. Same lights. But nothing felt normal anymore. --- “You’re quiet,” Adrian said. Amara didn’t look at him. “I’m thinking too much again.” “That’s becoming a habit.” “It’s not funny.” “I wasn’t joking.” --- Silence returned. But it wasn’t calm silence. It was waiting silence. --- Blackridge Tower – Restricted Access Wing They didn’t go to the executive floor this time. The elevator stopped lower. A level Amara had never seen before. No signage. No staff movement. Just cold white lighting and locked doors. --- Amara stepped out slowly. “This place wasn’t on the building map,” she said. “It isn’t supposed to be accessible,” Adrian replied. “Then why are we here?” He looked at her. “Because the system activated.” --- She frowned. “What system?” Adrian didn’t answer immediately. He walked ahead instead. “Stay close.” --- They reached a circular door. Metal. No handle. Just a panel glowing faint blue. --- Amara stopped. “This feels like a bad idea.” Adrian placed his hand on the panel. “Probably.” “That’s not reassuring.” “I know.” --- The panel scanned. A soft sound followed. Then— Access granted. --- Amara blinked. “You have clearance for this?” Adrian pushed the door open. “I didn’t.” --- That made her pause. “What does that mean?” He stepped inside first. Then said: “It means it recognized both of us.” --- Her stomach tightened slightly. She followed. --- Inside the Locked Layer The room was not what she expected. No office. No machines. Just a long circular space filled with transparent panels floating in mid-air. Data streams. Profiles. Names. Connections. --- Amara froze. “What is this?” Adrian looked around slowly. “The hidden registry layer.” --- She stepped closer to one of the floating panels. Her breath caught. --- There were names. Hundreds. Maybe thousands. But not normal names. Each one had layers underneath. Access history. Behavior mapping. Status tags. --- And then— She saw it. Her name. --- AMARA DANIELS STATUS: ACTIVE NODE ORIGIN FLAG: UNKNOWN LINKED SYSTEM ENTRY: BLACKRIDGE CORE --- Her hand trembled slightly. “No…” she whispered. “This is not real.” --- Adrian stood beside her. “It is.” --- She turned sharply. “I’m not a system node.” He didn’t deny it. Just said: “You are classified as one.” --- Silence dropped. Heavy. Immediate. --- Amara stepped back. “This is insane.” “It’s data.” “It’s my life on a screen!” --- Adrian looked at another panel. “You’re not the only one.” --- She followed his gaze. More names. Dozens highlighted. All marked the same way. ACTIVE NODE. --- Amara’s voice dropped. “So I’m part of a group.” Adrian nodded slightly. “Yes.” --- “And Victoria is part of this too?” “Higher tier.” --- Amara swallowed. “And you?” --- That question made him pause. Longer than before. --- Then: “I used to be listed here.” --- That hit differently. Amara turned fully toward him. “What do you mean used to?” --- Adrian looked at her. Calm. But distant. “I was removed.” “Removed how?” “By force.” --- Silence. --- Amara looked back at the panels. “This system… it assigns people roles.” “Yes.” “And I was assigned… what?” Adrian stepped closer. He pointed at her profile. --- NODE CLASS: KEY ACCESS TRIGGER --- Amara stared at it. Slowly. Processing. --- “What does that mean?” she asked quietly. Adrian answered: “It means the system activates around you.” --- A pause. Then— “You don’t control events,” he added. “You unlock them.” --- Silence fell again. But this time— It felt like the world had tilted slightly. --- Sudden Alert A sharp sound echoed through the chamber. Red light flashed across the floating panels. --- SYSTEM ALERT: UNAUTHORIZED PRESENCE DETECTED --- Amara stepped back immediately. “What did you do?” Adrian looked around quickly. “I didn’t trigger it.” --- The panels shifted. New data appeared. Fast. Rapid. --- Victoria’s name flashed. Then multiple board members. Then— Amara’s profile expanded. --- Amara froze. “That’s not normal.” Adrian stepped forward. “This wasn’t active before.” --- SYSTEM UPDATE INITIATED NODE ALIGNMENT IN PROGRESS --- The room trembled slightly. --- Amara’s breathing quickened. “What is happening?” Adrian’s voice dropped. “The system is responding to your presence.” --- “Responding how?” --- The panels rearranged themselves. Lines connecting. Mapping. Locking. --- Then— A final message appeared: --- LOCKDOWN PROTOCOL INITIATED EXIT RESTRICTED UNTIL ALIGNMENT COMPLETE --- Silence. --- Amara turned sharply. “We’re trapped.” Adrian didn’t deny it. He looked at her. And said calmly: “Yes.” --- 🔥 End of Episode 10 (part 1)
