After three tense hours passed in the mountain hideout, the flames in the hearth flickered blue—a subtle signal from Asmodeus’s magic that Zepar had received their message and now knew their location. Relief mingled with apprehension as night draped itself over the mountains.
“We move now,” Asmodeus said, his voice hushed but urgent. He traced intricate sigils in the air, casting a veil of concealment over the group. Shadows seemed to cling to them, muffling their presence from prying eyes.
With a whispered incantation, Asmodeus transported them to the city’s outskirts. The busy lights and distant sounds of civilization greeted them as they hurried through quiet streets, keeping close to the shadows. Mira led the way, her heart pounding as they approached her home.
As they reached her front door, Mira’s steps faltered. The door stood ajar, swaying slightly in the night breeze. Her breath caught in her throat. “The door… it’s open. Someone’s been here.”
Ashen’s hand instinctively went to her shoulder. “Stay behind us,” he whispered, voice tense with warning. Asmodeus’s eyes flashed with alertness as he motioned for silence.
They slipped inside, every sense on edge, prepared to face whatever—or whoever—waited for them within.
As they crept through the dim hallway, voices drifted from the living room—low, frustrated, and all too familiar. “Where did she go? She couldn’t have just vanished…”
Mira’s breath caught. Recognition flashed in her eyes. “Wait,” she hissed, grabbing Ashen’s arm before he could move forward. “That’s my brothers—Eli and Marcus.”
Ashen and Asmodeus tensed, ready to defend her, but Mira slipped past them and hurried into the living room. “Eli? Marcus?”
Her two older brothers whirled around, shock and relief crossing their faces. “Mira! Where have you been? We’ve been worried sick!”
Ashen and Asmodeus exchanged a glance, their guard still up but trusting Mira’s instincts. Mira quickly turned, waving for them to stand down. “It’s okay, they’re family,” she said breathlessly. “They won’t hurt us.”
Ashen nodded, relaxing his stance just a bit, while Asmodeus kept a wary eye on the room. The unexpected family reunion had changed the stakes, but Mira knew her brothers’ presence might just help—or complicate—the search for the mysterious necklace.
Eli and Marcus rushed toward Mira, their faces a mix of worry and frustration. “Where have you been? Are you okay? Mom and Dad are losing their minds looking for you—we haven’t heard from you in five days!” Eli exclaimed.
Mira nodded quickly, forcing a reassuring smile. “I’m okay, really. I’m sorry I scared you all.” She glanced over her shoulder at Ashen and Asmodeus, then back at her brothers. “These are my friends. Ashen is… my boyfriend.” Her cheeks colored with a deep blush. “And this is his brother, Asmodeus. We took a last-minute trip. I should have called—I know.”
Eli and Marcus exchanged skeptical, protective glances with Ashen and Asmodeus, neither side quite trusting the other. The tension in the room thickened, the men silently sizing each other up, uncertain what to make of the situation.
Ashen stepped forward, his posture respectful but guarded. “We didn’t mean to worry anyone. Mira’s safety has always been our top priority.”
Asmodeus simply nodded, his eyes scanning the room for any sign of danger. The air hummed with unspoken questions and suspicion, but for now, Mira’s quick thinking had defused the immediate threat—at least until the real reason for their visit came to light.
Eli stepped closer, concern etched deep in his features. “Mira, what’s going on? You know you can tell us anything.”
Mira glanced at her brothers, nerves fluttering in her stomach. She hesitated but decided to stick to her story. “It was just a last-minute trip. I needed to get away for a bit, clear my head. I’m sorry I didn’t let anyone know.”
Marcus crossed his arms, his eyes narrowing slightly. “And this Ashen guy—how come you never mentioned him before? How long have you two known each other?”
Eli chimed in, a teasing but protective note in his voice. “And when were you planning on introducing him to Mom and Dad?”
Mira felt her cheeks heat up again. She shot Ashen a quick, apologetic glance before answering. “We haven’t been together that long. It all happened really fast, but he’s… special. I was going to tell you all soon, but everything just got so… complicated.”
Ashen offered a gentle, reassuring smile, playing along. “I care about your sister a lot. I’m sorry for the surprise. I hope we can earn your trust.”
The brothers exchanged another wary look, but some of their tension eased. “You’d better,” Marcus muttered, though a faint smile touched his lips. The awkward stand-off softened, but Mira knew her answers had only satisfied them for now—and that they needed to get to the true reason for their visit soon.
Mira shifted the conversation, her curiosity now outweighing her nerves. “Hey… what do you guys remember about Grandma? On Dad’s side. I realized I don’t really know much about her or our family history.”
Eli and Marcus exchanged puzzled glances. “Why are you asking about Grandma all of a sudden?” Marcus asked, suspicion creeping back into his tone.
Mira shrugged, trying to sound casual. “We were talking about ancestors, and I realized I hardly know anything about her. She was always kind of mysterious, right?”
Eli scratched his head, thinking. “Honestly, I don’t remember much. She kept to herself after Grandpa died. Dad never talked about her family, either.”
Marcus nodded in agreement. “All I really know is she had that old house out in the woods—a few hours from here. No one’s been there in years. I think Dad still has the keys somewhere, but the place has been abandoned since she passed.”
Mira’s eyes widened slightly. She glanced at Ashen and Asmodeus, a flicker of hope and urgency in her expression. Maybe that house held the answers they needed.
