As they gathered their few belongings and prepared to leave, Ashen caught sight of the worry etched across Mira’s face. She was quiet, her movements slow, her eyes clouded with fear and uncertainty. Gently, he stepped closer and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
“It’s all right to be scared,” Ashen said softly, his gaze steady and sincere. “I know this isn’t easy—not knowing what you’ll find, or what it means. But whatever your family’s secret is, you don’t have to face it alone. I’ll be with you every step of the way. So will Asmodeus.”
Mira looked up, meeting Ashen’s eyes. The warmth in his expression steadied her nerves just a little. She managed a shaky smile, drawing strength from his presence.
“Thank you,” she whispered. “I just… I hope I’m ready for the truth.”
Ashen squeezed her hand gently. “You’re stronger than you think, Mira. We’ll face it together—no matter what we find.”
As Ashen finished reassuring Mira, Asmodeus approached, his expression focused and resolute. “It’s time,” he said, glancing between them. “Stay close—this shift will be easier than the last, but hold on to each other.”
With a whispered incantation and a sweep of his hand, shadows and flame curled around them. In a blink, the oppressive heat of Hell vanished, replaced by the crisp, cool air of the mountains. The hidden house stood tucked among ancient trees and misty peaks, safe and silent beneath the sheltering sky.
As soon as they arrived, Asmodeus wasted no time. He moved to the hearth, striking a match and conjuring a small, controlled flame. With practiced hands, he traced the necessary sigils and spoke Zepar’s name, sending a fire message through the realms:
“We’ve crossed to the earthly realm. We’re at the mountain hideout. Send word here when you find Lilith.”
The message burned, its sparks vanishing into the air, carrying their location to Zepar. For now, Mira, Ashen, and Asmodeus were safe—hidden from Hell’s pursuit and ready to begin searching for the truth about Mira’s past.
Asmodeus settled into a chair by the hearth, curiosity sharpening his features. “Mira, now that we’re here, tell us everything you know about your family. Even the smallest detail might help.”
Mira sat down, pulling her knees up to her chest as she searched for her memory. “Honestly, I don’t know much. My parents never talked about our ancestors. The only thing that stands out is my grandmother on my father’s side. Everyone called her ‘Loopy.’ They thought she lost her mind after my grandfather died.”
Ashen sat beside her, listening intently. “What made them think that?”
Mira shrugged. “She would talk about seeing things—shadows, lights, people who weren’t there. She’d tell stories about ‘other worlds’ and warn us to stay away from certain places at night. Most of the family just… ignored her. They said it was grief.”
Asmodeus exchanged a meaningful glance with Ashen. “Sometimes, the ones called mad are the ones closest to the truth. Did she ever say anything about family secrets, or give you anything—an object, a letter, anything unusual?”
Mira shook her head, then paused, uncertainty flickering in her eyes. “There was an old necklace she always wore. She said it protected her from the ‘night things.’ I think I still have it in a box somewhere…” Her voice trailed off, a new sense of importance settling over the memory.
Ashen nodded encouragingly. “If you can find it, it might help us—and maybe explain why you’re different.”
Mira nodded back, feeling a spark of hope through the uncertainty.
Mira thought for a while and asked, "How are we going to look for the necklace without getting caught?"
Ashen considered Mira’s question carefully, his brow furrowed with concern. “We’ll need to be smart about it. If Lucifer’s eyes are still searching for us, we can’t risk drawing attention.”
Asmodeus nodded. “I can cast a veil of concealment over us, but it won’t last long and won’t make us invisible to everyone—especially not powerful demons or those using magic to track us. We’ll have to move quickly and quietly.”
Mira bit her lip, thinking. “My place isn’t far from here. If we wait until night, there’s less chance of anyone noticing. I can show you where I keep the box.”
Ashen squeezed her hand, offering reassurance. “We’ll go together. You’ll point out the box, and Asmodeus and I will search while you watch for trouble. We’ll be in and out before anyone even knows we were there.”
Asmodeus added, “And if anything feels off, we leave immediately—no matter what. Your safety comes first, Mira.”
Mira nodded, determination settling in. “All right. Tonight, we find the necklace.”
