Chapter 37

“She never slept with Jessie or Patrick. Jessie left because of what I told him last night in my office. He clearly is smitten and in love with Dawn. If you behaved more like her, you might have gotten his attention. But he’s already asked her out on a date. She turned him down because of you. She’s not ready to go public because of you. Let them have their moment. She’s going to college in a couple years and he returns without her. You can scheme then. But don’t hurt her because you are jealous. I was once jealous. And I acted poorly. You can do better than I did.” Mark said.

Laura looked at Mark and nodded.

Jessie opened Dawn’s door and he helped her out of the car. Derek, Oscar, Mike, Vince, Miles, Jason, Justin and Anthony were all at the entrance waiting to enter. They saw Patrick, Dawn and Jessie and they called them over. They let them cut in.

“Good morning, Dawn. Wow you look beautiful this morning.” Justin said.

Jessie slightly nudged Dawn closer to his side.

“Easy on the flirting, Dawn had a bad night and morning. Jessie is in protective mode because Laura hurt Dawn and Mr Purkles strangled her.” Patrick explained.

“That explains the bruises, but how did Dawn meet Mr Purkles?” Derek asked.

“Actually, I was lost and wondering around. I found his pond and he found me and choked me then recognised me and let me go. He took me to his and we had an interesting chat.” Dawn said.

“You spoke to Mr Purkles?” Oscar asked.

Shock was on their faces as they looked at Dawn for answers.

“There’s more.” Patrick said.

Dawn looked and saw Jenny.

“Jenny!” Dawn said.

Dawn waved but Jenny looked at her with a disgusted look.

“Well, now we know Laura told Jenny the lies.” Patrick said.

“What more is there about Mr Purkles?” Mike asked.

Mike really wanted to know.

“He knew my parents, Mr Purkles is my godfather. And he gave me photos of my parents and it turns out that I look so much like my mother.” Dawn said.

Jessie paid for the group to go through as everyone looked shocked at Dawn. He gently tugged her arm to walk in to not hold up the queue.

Lucas and Scott were inside sitting at a table and chairs.

“Dawn!” Scott said loudly.

Dawn turned and waved, surprised expression on her face. Lucas and Scott ran to Dawn, she ran to them and hugged them. Jessie walked over with the guys.

“What’s the looks on everyone’s faces for?” Lucas asked.

“Mr Purkles is her godfather.” Miles said with a scared voice.

Lucas and Scott turned a bit pale.

“You know Mr Purkles?” Lucas asked.

“He choked her yesterday before he recognised her.” Patrick said.

“He hurt you?” Scott asked.

Scott grabbed her chin and lifted it. He saw her hickey on her shoulder but was going to address it later.

“Did he do that too?” Scott asked.

“Laura did that one. And there might me one on her leg. Laura attacked her again this morning.” Patrick said.

“Dawn, you’re not a virgin anymore?” Lucas asked.

Concern was filled in his voice.

“No, I am. I gave myself a hickey to prove a point and piss off Laura.” Dawn said.

She told a half-truth to protect Jessie.

“Jessie has been protective of Dawn since Laura attacked her twice. He came over as soon as he found out.” Patrick said.

“Well, I’m no longer talking to her.” Jessie said.

Jessie stepped up behind Dawn.

“Let’s get you something to eat since your breakfast was interrupted.” Jessie said.

Dawn nodded.

“I’ll catch you guys later.” Dawn said.

“Patrick, aren’t you going to follow them?” Derek asked.

“No, I ate breakfast. Dawn was in her room crying after Laura kicked her hard. Dawn missed out on breakfast. And besides, they are sort of like an unofficial couple.” Patrick said.

Patrick started walking towards a ride.

“What do you mean?” Lucas asked.

“I mean, he heard she was hit, he came over last night and hugged her as she cried all night. They fell asleep next to each other. Then he snuck out, he called and asked her out on a date. She said no because of the way Laura’s been behaving. And so, he asked me to tag along so they can be alone for a little bit without making it look romantic. He went into her room, comforted her, carried her to the bathroom so she can change, carried her back to her room and when we went upstairs he was doing her hair for her and then they just hugged. They aren’t officially dating. But it’s like they are already. And dad actually gave them his blessing. His whole speech about killing anyone who will touch her. He knows Dawn kissed Jessie at the party yesterday and he knows they like each other. As long as she stays a virgin, he is okay with them doing whatever in public.” Patrick said.

“Damn, he’s a lucky son of a bitch.” Derek said.

“To be honest, even I like her. But I can’t. Dad said she’s forbidden from all of us. He’s made the exception for Jessie given everything that’s happened. Even her hawk climbed on Jessie to show he can be trusted.” Patrick said.

Dawn was eating a large cup of hot chips with hot gravy smothered on it. She was sharing it with Jessie when Lucas and Scott came over.

“Patrick told us you are sort of dating. All I want to say is please take good care of her. Dawn means a lot to me and I don’t want her hurt.” Lucas said.

Scott nodded as if he agreed.

“I don’t intend to hurt Dawn. She’s the only person that I care about in the world.” Jessie said.

“Dawn, we want to challenge you to the obstacle course. But be warned there’s sprinklers so no phones allowed.” Scott said.

“I’m in, I have a lot of anger from Laura. I’d be happy to release it.” Dawn said.

“Can it wait until she finishes the chips? She hadn’t eaten breakfast.” Jessie said.

“Yeah, we are fine waiting.” Lucas said.

“We will meet you there.” Scott said.

“Where is it?” Dawn asked.

“Head down this way, take a left at the ride called the zipper. Then a right at the kids petting zoo. Then walk straight until you see it.” Lucas said.

“We will see you soon.” Dawn said.

She smiled at them and they walked away.

Jessie used his fork and grabbed a chip for Dawn. She laughed as he made an airplane sound and went towards her.
