“The ball isn’t the prize. A hug is.” Jessie said.
Dawn arched her eye brow as she thought for a minute. Then she realised and her mouth opened wide.
Dawn looked a little flushed. Jessie noticed and started running towards her.
Dawn turned to run, Jessie closed in and tackled her. The ball flew out of her hand as they fell to the ground. They rolled down the hill tumbling. Dawn looked at Jessie shocked.
“How did you?” Dawn started to ask.
“I was pretending to be out of breath. I realised you have a weak spot for that.” Jessie said.
Jessie was laying on Dawn and hugged her before rolling off of her.
Dawn rolled into his lap. She grabbed his arms and pinned him down.
“What made you realise my plan?” Dawn asked.
“I guessed.” Jessie laughed.
“But, but I don’t understand.” Dawn said.
“Face it, you got bested by a jelly skin.” Jessie joked.
Dawn’s face was shocked. She stared closely at him for a moment then laughed. She leaned closer to his ear. Her face was red.
“You win this round. But next time won’t be so easy.” Dawn whispered.
Dawn got to her feet. Jessie grabbed her ankle and pulled. She fell down and he laughed. He pinned her down now. He leaned over her and looked into her eyes.
“I’ll win, I’m determined to win.” Jessie said softly.
He looked into Dawn’s eyes. Dawn was trying her hardest to not blush. Then her face changed and Jessie noticed it and was worried.
“What’s wrong?” Jessie asked.
“Jessie, please hop off. My tummy is hurting again.” Dawn said.
Jessie hopped off quickly. Dawn held her tummy as she groaned in pain.
Jessie walked around her and lifted her up. Jessie held her back to his chest as she held her stomach in pain. Scott ran over the hill.
“Get her phone! Call Mark! She’s having pain!” Jessie shouted.
Scott nodded and ran to the gazebo.
Mark rang the ambulance for Dawn as he waited for the girls parents to pick them up.
Dawn was carried to the ambulance by Wendy.
Patrick went with Dawn as Jessie walked back to the house with the guys to watch Laura and the girls for Mark. Dawn was crying in pain.
“Dawn, when did the tummy start hurting?” Wendy asked.
“It started before I moved in. I never told anyone.” Dawn cried.
“We will get you checked.” Wendy said.
They went to the hospital, Patrick was in the emergency room they gave Dawn. They took her up for tests and X-rays. They returned her an hour later to see Tate and Mark in the room as well.
“Dawn presented with severe stomach pain, she said she has been having it since before she moved in. She admitted to hiding it.” Wendy explained.
“Do you why she would hide it?” Tate asked.
Wendy shook her head.
“I spoke to the doctors and nurses, they understand her situation. They will be back with test results soon.” Wendy said.
Dawn grabbed her hand as she was about to walk away.
“Please don’t leave me.” Dawn said softly.
“I’m right here, I just need to tell them that I can’t finish my shift.” Wendy said.
Dawn nodded and let go. The doctor came back when Wendy did.
“Can we talk without the young man present?” The doctor asked.
“Patrick, please go back to the waiting room.” Mark said.
Patrick nodded and walked out.
“Dawn’s body is trying to make her have her period but her body is unable to make her. The eggs are already there and trying to, they are building a blockage. We recommend having her take the pill for a while until she’s had a few months of normal periods to help her.” The doctor said.
“You mean she’s going through puberty already but her body won’t let her?” Tate asked.
“Essentially yes. Now while we have a female paramedic nearby, I think it would be easier to have her talk to Dawn about how to prepare for it. How to change the products and keep healthy. But essentially her body is trying to stop her from growing up.” The doctor said.
“Could this be because of the trauma?” Tate asked.
“It could be. But it could be because she had been abused right before it started that it dislodged and caused a mild infection to prevent it. Either way to lower the chance of infection we will have a script for antibiotics and a script for the pill. If she doesn’t bleed in the next month, bring her back.” The doctor said.
They nodded. They looked at Dawn, her eyes filled with tears.
“I heard you punched Jessie today, care to explain why?” Mark asked softly.
“Jessie said I was getting the boys attention. I wasn’t. I was hanging out with Lucas and Scott. Everyone else left Jessie at the court and so I approached and he was angry that they left. So, I punched him with his permission for his assumption.” Dawn groaned.
“He gave you permission to punch him?” Mark asked.
Dawn nodded and then laughed.
“He fell on his butt.” Dawn said.
Tate laughed.
“I called him Jelly because he felt like jelly when I hit him.” Dawn said.
“Well, as long as you don’t hit him again, I can overlook it this once.” Mark said.
“He promised to not do it again.” Dawn said.
“Can I talk to Dawn and explain how to use the products?” Wendy asked.
“Can I hear? Laura is close to puberty, I need to know what to say to her.” Mark said.
Wendy nodded.
She explained how to use tampons and pads. Wendy used examples with a pad and tampon. Showing Mark how they get used with her gestures.
“I don’t want anything inside me. Can I just use pads?” Dawn asked.
“Of course, sweetheart. But when you are on a period try to not go swimming as well.” Wendy said.
She explained chocolate and ice cream help girls with heightened mood swings while on their period. Dawn was looking terrified.
“What sizes do you recommend?” Tate asked.
“They have different sizes?” Mark asked.
“The sizes all depend on the blood flow. It’s easier to get regulars and overnight ones. That way you know. There is a chance she may bleed through her clothes so I recommend a designated chair with a towel on it that she can use in case this happens.” Wendy said.
They nodded as they listened.
“If you need anything, I can give you my personal number.” Wendy said.
Mark and Tate nodded. Wendy wrote her number down and gave it to them.
“Good luck Dawn. Just rest because it will be painful okay.” Wendy said.
Dawn nodded.
