Chapter 10

1055 Words
“Why did he hit you?” The male paramedic asked. “I don’t want to say.” Dawn cried. “We need to write it in our report Dawn. It will stay between us.” Wendy said. Dawn leaned to the paramedic and hugged her. She leaned into her ear. “Because I wouldn’t let him in my room. I locked the door.” Dawn whispered. She was visibly shaking in Wendy’s arms. Wendy wrapped her arms around her. “You aren’t going to be in that situation anymore. And if someone tries to do that again, you hurt them and then run. Call dispatch and I will be the first to arrive. Tell them to say it’s Dawn.” Wendy said. They looked confused at Wendy as she started crying while holding Dawn. “If you do look after her, you make sure no one hurts her.” Wendy said. “I promise.” Mark said. Wendy looked at Tate. “You get that predator in jail. You make sure he doesn’t get out.” Wendy said. Those words told them why she was caned. Mark and Tate felt sympathetic for her a lot. “While you are here. Can I just ask, how often does someone have different shade eyes?” Mark asked. “I don’t know, never seen one. Why?” The male paramedic asked. “Dawn has got two different shades of blue in her eyes. I noticed when she was looking up when I was cleaning her sore from earlier.” Mark said. The paramedic walked behind the female one and looked at Dawn. “Dawn, can I have a look?” The male paramedic asked. Dawn looked at him. He turned his torch on and looked in her eyes. “This is odd, I’ve never seen this. Have you had your eyes tested before?” The male paramedic asked. Dawn shook her head. Wendy leaned back to look. “They are really beautiful Dawn. You’re going to be a beautiful young lady when you grow up.” Wendy said. Dawn held her tighter as if to say thank you. She was scared if she let go, it might seem like a dream. That if she let go, they wouldn’t have helped, she would be stuck at that home, that everything would go back to normal. Dawn held tight. Wendy patted the top of her back near her shoulders. “You are going to be safe now.” Wendy said. “Dawn, how about we get you some food?” Mark asked. “She seems scared to let go.” Wendy said softly. They looked confused. “Her heart is racing and she’s closing her eyes tight.” Wendy said. “She has these often. When it does happens she needs hugs. And usually it is easier for her to hug a female.” Tate said. “It’s okay Dawn.” Wendy said. After another 10 minutes of Dawn holding Wendy, she slowly let go. She hadn’t noticed that she crawled out of the sheet. Her bruise was on display to Tate and Mark. They saw her thighs and saw it was past her shorts. Mark was really concerned, he looked at Tate. Tate took a picture because this one shows the cane shape on her thighs. “We have to go back to work. But I will see you around okay.” Wendy said. Dawn nodded. She crawled to Mark and hugged him. He looked surprised and hugged her. Tate watched Mark awkwardly trying to not touch her bruises. “Let’s get you some food.” Mark said. Mark stood up while holding Dawn. The paramedics hugged her goodbye then left. Mark gestured for Tate to follow them. He walked to the dining room and helped sit Dawn down. Dawn didn’t want to let go. “How about, I let go and get the food to the table and then I dish out the food. Then I will hug you again. The kids will be starving.” Mark said. Dawn removed her hands and nodded. She looked down and Tate noticed. “It’s okay Dawn. We are waiting for you to be given permission to stay here.” Tate said. Tate had messaged the new photo and said that the man was a predator and beat her with bamboo. Mark carried the slow cooker dish to the wooden chopping board on the table. He added two dinner rolls to each mini plate dished out. He put butter in the middle then he went to get some rice from the rice cooker and put that on the table. “KIDS!” Mark called out. Mark carried a jug of juice to the table. He filled up everyone’s cups. Laura was skipping down the stairs as Jessie and Patrick raced each other down. Mark was sitting next to Dawn with Tate on the other side of her. They saw Dawn had been crying. “Are you feeling any better Dawn?” Patrick asked. Dawn nodded while looking down. Laura walked in slowly. Mark was dishing rice and his large quantity of chicken korma into the bowls. He started with the boys because he went clockwise. Tate’s phone started to ring. “It’s the boss.” Tate said. “Come join us afterwards.” Mark said softly. Tate nodded. He walked away to answer. “What’s the verdict?” Tate asked. “Are you near around a fax machine?” Luke asked. “I’m not sure.” Tate said. “You’re going to need these forms to gather her things tonight.” Luke said. “I will ask, otherwise I will come in as soon as I finish dinner. I’m eating here with Dawn.” Tate said. “Very well. Call me back when you finish.” Luke said. “Yes sir.” Tate said. Tate hung up. He walked into the room again. Dawn was playing with her food. She ate the bread only. Mark and Tate were noticing it. “Was the phone call good or bad?” Mark asked. “Do you have a fax machine?” Tate asked. “I do, it’s in the office.” Mark said. “Can I get the number. I need to get forms to gather her things tonight.” Tate said.
