Chapter 2

He sounded jealous that Dawn had a lot of boys attention, but he was concerned for Laura as well. “Well, Dawn ignores it politely by making conversation. Until one says something wrong. She’s already beat up two boys. But now Scott and Lucas sit near us sometimes and they intervene because they don’t like Dawn fighting.” Laura explained. Dawn was overlooking their shoulders ignoring the conversation. “I’ll see you at the party.” Dawn said. “Wait what? What about school tomorrow?” Laura asked. “I’m about to get suspended.” Dawn said. “What makes you say that?” Laura asked. “Remember yesterday’s fun?” Dawn asked. “Yeah, what about it?” Laura asked. “Look at Mr Davis.” Dawn said. Dawn walked across the road as they looked. “Why’s he holding a bag with a spray paint can?” Jessie asked. “Because Dawn painted his car with it. And she left her bag behind.” Laura said. Jessie and Patrick laughed. “She sounds like a troublemaker.” Jessie said. “She is, but a fun one. If someone is mean, she makes a way to show people. We saw him push a kid out of the way and not help him up. She spraypainted on his car some words that I’ll be in trouble for repeating.” Laura said. “I’m even more curious what she wrote.” Jessie said. “What words Laura? We won’t tell anyone you swore.” Patrick said. “Asshole, butthead, wanker, s**t face. More like that.” Laura said. Jessie tried holding back his snickering laugh but he couldn’t. Patrick joined him. “Your best friend sounds like a bad ass.” Patrick said. They watched Dawn walk over to the teacher. She grabbed her bag from him and he grabbed her shoulder. She nudged her shoulder out of his grip. They saw him visibly grip her shirt and pull her to follow. Dawn stomped on his foot and grabbed the can. She sprayed him in the face then ran the other direction. They all laughed as they watched her. Dawn slid under the school fence, she ran into oncoming traffic and almost got hit by a car. They looked on in shock as she kept running down the road. “She’s a bit wild, but she’s really funny and great and makes me feel safe. Please don’t tell dad she’s wild. He will say she can’t come over.” Laura said. “As long as she doesn’t get arrested, or cause you harm. Then he won’t know.” Patrick said. “I kind of want to follow her and see what she does next. She looks like she’s up to some more trouble.” Jessie said. “What do you know about her?” Patrick asked. “Not much. She’s a mystery.” Laura said. They started walking home. Patrick had his arm around Laura as they walked away. “I might get in trouble for skipping class.” Laura said. “Tell dad the truth, you were crying from being bullied.” Jessie said. “He won’t believe me.” Laura said. “He might. We can say we found you crying when you left the school.” Patrick said. “I’m not a good liar. Dawn’s great at it, I’m not.” Laura said. “What makes you think she’s good at it?” Patrick asked. “Well, they interrogated us at assembly. And even though she did it, she was the only one that sounded genuinely convincing. She was the only one that didn’t laugh, she had some fake tears that looked real. And she looked like she pitied him. She was told to sit down. She sat next to me and gave me a low high five. I noticed Scott and Lucas watching us and they were laughing and we both know that they knew she did it.” Laura said. Later that evening, Jessie and Patrick did all the lying for Laura. With the permission from their dad, they walked Laura to the shops to get some chocolate. They took their time walking to the shop to buy her some chocolate after Patrick saw she had a bruise on her shoulder. They were walking past the park on the way home when they heard a noise and someone clapping. It was a creepy older man clapping at Dawn. Dawn was swinging on a few large horizontal poles like a gymnast at the park. “Keep it up Dawn!” Tate said. They stopped and watched. Dawn rotated her wrist and spun to turn around while holding herself with one hand above the pole. They watched in shock. “Do the splits then spin into a dismount.” Tate said. “Yes sir.” Dawn said. Dawn started to do the splits while she was above the horizontal pole. They watched her with a shocked look on her face. “Did you know she can do this?” Jessie whispered. “No.” Laura whispered. Dawn did the splits until her legs were far apart. She spun while doing the splits, straightened her legs then did the dismount after getting the momentum. Dawn landed and raised her hands. “Proud of you, kiddo. Now go have fun while I tell them of your progress.” Tate said. Dawn nodded.
