Dawn grabbed her certificate first, she grabbed the large yellow envelope he handed her and a plague as well as a large thick book. Dawn was crying as she looked at them.
“Thank you.” Dawn cried.
Dawn hugged him and he hugged her back.
“I hope you love the gifts.” He said softly.
Dawn nodded. She hugged all the teachers on stage as she was about to leave the screen behind her changed and played music. Dawn stopped and looked in shock. It showed her at the carnival on the roller coaster. It showed so many photos and videos of her at school events on the screen and it ended with a photo of her that they edited.
“Our exceptional Dawn, may you be the sunrise that never sets. Shine your way into everyone’s heart.” Was written on the screen.
Dawn cried as she finished walking off the stage. All the students went over to hug her then Mark did.
“You really are the best.” Mark said.
Dawn cried as Mark picked her up and carried her to his chair. He sat her down as he stood up behind her. They stayed for everyone to receive their certificates then Lucas and Scott came up to hug her.
“That was a beautiful speech.” Lucas said.
“You made everyone laugh. They will remember that for sure.” Scott said.
Dawn went to a party with Patrick as a chaperone to prevent what happened last time. Then she was bored at home for almost the whole next year. Dawn wasn’t allowed to attend college until she was 18 but she did get accepted into so many colleges. She knew Jessie went to Harvard, so she declined their invitation. Derek was in Harvard. And Dawn wanted to join Derek but didn’t want to see Jessie. Then Dawn thought maybe Yale might help. Both Princeton and Yale offered her a full scholarship including boarding.
Mark is willing to pay for her but Dawn wants to earn her way there. She’s already made a resume and started to get things ready for when she does leave. Dawn never touched her letter or her briefcase. She decided it was better to wait until she was in college to read what he had to say.
Mark had taught Dawn how to drive, he gave her a second-hand car to get around and Dawn had her valuable things packed inside it, including the briefcase and the letter. Dawn was always out and about. She was rarely home. One day she saw Lucas sitting at the park alone. Dawn pulled over and went to him.
“What’s wrong?” Dawn asked.
Lucas looked up. He had tears in his eyes.
“Dawn? What are you doing here?” Lucas asked.
“I was driving around feeling the wind in my hair. Then I saw you and popped in. What’s wrong?” Dawn asked.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” Lucas said.
Dawn sat next to him on the table and put her arm around him.
“I’m here for you if you need me.” Dawn said.
Lucas nodded.
He just looked down as he cried. Dawn pulled him to her chest and wrapped her arms around him. She comforted him as he cried. Her arm rubbing up and down his arm and his back.
“I’m sorry.” Lucas cried.
He sat up straight.
“Don’t be sorry.” Dawn said softly.
“Dawn, don’t. I have many reasons to be sorry. Especially to you.” Lucas said.
“Forgiven and forgotten. You are my friend.” Dawn said.
“How haven’t you hurt me from the note.” Lucas asked.
“Because I know what it’s like to have feelings for someone. And though I love you as a friend. I am worried if it became more, it would ruin our friendship or complicate it. So, I can’t think of it. Besides, I don’t want to date, I want to go to college. I plan on trying to do it in less time so I need to be focused on that.” Dawn said softly.
“You aren’t mad that I’ve loved you since we were kids?” Lucas asked.
“To be honest, I liked you a lot. But after everything with Jessie, it made me sure that I won’t be putting my future on hold for anyone. I want to graduate college before I end up worrying about things like dating, marriage and babies.” Dawn said.
Lucas nodded.
“I thought you hated me for it.” Lucas cried.
Dawn grabbed his chin and moved it to face her. She shook her head.
“I could never hate my Luky Wuky.” Dawn said playfully.
Lucas smiled slightly.
“I’ll prove it.” Dawn said softly.
Lucas raised his eyebrow confused.
“Remember, this doesn’t mean a relationship.” Dawn said.
“What doesn’t?” Lucas asked.
Dawn grabbed his face and pulled him towards her. She kissed him softly and he was shocked. It took him a few moments to realise they were kissing. He put his hand on her cheek and his other arm around her. Dawn wiggled closer to close the gap between them as she kept kissing him. When she pulled back slowly, Dawn saw Lucas was blushing.
“You’re a great kisser. That was actually amazing.” Dawn blushed.
Lucas smiled as he looked away, Dawn wiped his tear that was falling.
“I can’t say I will be with you, because I don’t know what my future holds. But I am wanting to focus on college. I will be finding work while in college as well so I will be distracted. But I promise you Luky Wuky, that no matter what, you will always have me in your life. You’re a great guy and you mean a lot to me.” Dawn said softly.
Lucas nodded and Dawn hugged him tight.
“What college are you thinking of choosing?” Lucas asked.
“Yale or Princeton. They both offered full scholarships including boarding.” Dawn said.
“I got into Princeton. If you go there, we can hang out a lot. Scott is going there as well.” Lucas said.
“That sounds great.” Dawn said.
“I hope to see you there.” Lucas said softly.
“Are you going to live on campus?” Dawn asked.
“Yes, are you?” Lucas asked.
“Yeah. We should totally have study sessions together again. They are fun.” Dawn giggled.
Lucas laughed.
“I’ll tell Scott.” Lucas said.
Dawn nodded.
“Come with me.” Dawn said.
Lucas followed Dawn to her car. He got in and she drove him to Scott’s.
