Chapter 63

Kai laughed again. Dawn ignored it. She finished storing her stuff away. She texted Scott before she started her shift. [Kai’s here. He was here when I arrived. Starting now.] – Dawn texted. Dawn put her phone in her bag then tied her apron on her. She served multiple customers and noticed Kai sitting there reading, she kept seeing him glancing at her from time to time, she first noticed it in the reflection of the coffee machine. Bruno Mars song Just the way you are came on and Dawn was singing it quietly as she finished making orders to deliver to the tables. As she cleaned multiple empty tables, Kai looked at her while she sang along. “You have a beautiful singing voice, Miss Dawn Rivers.” Kai said softly. “Thanks.” She mumbled. Kai heard her and laughed as he watched her. Dawn continued singing as she wiped over multiple chairs and cleaned the floor. Kai saw her reflection as she danced with the broom and dustpan in the back. Jet walked out. “Boss wants you to do stock inventory.” Jet said. Dawn nodded. She walked to the back after emptying the dustpan and then Christina Perri’s song Human came on and Dawn sang it as she walked into the back. Jet turned it up a little so she can hear it better. She sang louder because she was certain no one could hear her but Jet left a door open. Scott and Lucas walked in and sat in their reserved booth near the counter. “Welcome gentleman, she’s doing stock inventory.” Jet said. They nodded. They continued reading their books from earlier and kept their eyes on Kai. Kai was closing his eyes as he listened to Dawn. As she hit the higher and louder notes, he realised it was making him feel emotional. He got up and ordered another coffee. But he decided to order a toasted crumbed chicken wrap with a side salad. He also ordered an iced coffee. Then Kai changed his posture and his position. He put his feet on the chair that he had sat on previously. Bad reputation from Joan Jett and the blackhearts started playing. “Hey Jet!” Dawn shouted. “Here we go!” Jet said. “Hey, you added the song to the playlist.” Scott said. Kai looked confused. He saw Dawn come out pretending to play air guitar and jumping up and down in Jet’s face. Jet was trying to keep a straight face. But he kept accidentally laughing. Dawn handed a piece of paper to him, it was a list of the inventory items out back. Dawn started jumping in circles and then pointed at Jet as she yelled the last part. They laughed. “Dawn!” A loud voice called. “Uh oh.” Dawn said. Dawn walked out the back. “Was that you singing earlier?” Mr Mathers said. “Yes sir.” Dawn said. She was nervous. “We should hire you for entertainment.” Mr Mathers said. “Does that mean I am not in trouble for singing?” Dawn asked. “You’re not in trouble. Unless you want to be in trouble.” Mr Mathers said. “No, sir. Sorry. I’d be happy to.” Dawn said. “Good. It comes with a slight raise. Do you say an extra $5 an hour would suffice?” Mr Mathers asked. “That’s too much of a raise.” Dawn said. “Nonsense. You will get a mic to wear around your ear so you can sing while you work. You already are attracting customers. People are asking for when you are here to sign their magazines.” Mr Mathers said. “Oh.” Dawn said. “And that young gentleman has been listening to your voice and ordered more to keep listening to you. I recommend you sing more. Make your friends record a video and record it.” Mr Mathers said. Dawn nodded. She walked out with Mr Mathers behind her. “Can you boys record a video of Dawn singing and share it online to attract business?” Mr Mathers asked. They nodded. “She’s to start down there and make her way through. There’s more room for her to dance.” Mr Mathers said. “Isn’t that free publicity?” Jet asked. “No, Dawn’s getting a raise to perform while working from now on.” Mr Mathers said. Jet’s eyes opened wide. “Sing the next song Dawn, they can record it for you.” Mr Mathers said. Dawn nodded. She looked around a moment. “Swinging or standing on furniture, yay or nay to it?” Dawn asked. “As long as you don’t break it.” Mr Mathers said. Dawn nodded. “Very well. This is going to be fun. I have so much energy!” Dawn squealed. She giggled as she walked around. The new song was about to start and Lucas and Scott filmed her on their phones. Kelly Clarkson since you been gone started playing. Dawn started wiggling her hips to the beat but then she stood on a rotating stool and jumped to the large long table. Dawn sang loudly and danced on the table, she did pirouettes and then leant back to jump off the table, she twirled fast to the counter. Dawn jumped on the counter near the register and leaned back to look at Jet as she sang the last line. Kai was amazed at the performance she gave. He looked at her with wide eyes. “For the record, you’re cleaning the furniture.” Jet said. Dawn laughed. “I’m okay with that.” Dawn said.
