Chapter 60

1183 Words
Dawn was at the gymnasium in her cheerleading outfit and doing cheer practice with the other girls. She was having so much fun and laughing. The girls laughed at her energy she was giving off. Scott and Lucas kept looking up from reading. To their surprise, Kai walked in and pretended to look confused that they were there. He walked to a coach and was talking to him. The coach shook his hand and nodded. They walked away talking and the guys watched him closely. “I don’t like this, Scott how did he know we were here?” Lucas asked. “He looked confused to see us. Maybe he didn’t know.” Scott said. “No, his eyes were on Dawn. He knew.” Lucas said. Lucas walked closer to the cheerleaders and gestured for Dawn. She walked over. “Kai followed us in here and walked past behind you with his eyes on you a minute ago.” Lucas said. Dawn turned around and saw Kai talking to the coach in the office through the glass window. Then Kai turned his head to see Dawn. Almost like he knew she was looking at him. “Maybe he’s trying to ask about tryouts. He’s going to be pissed to find out I already got given a spot on the team because I was scouted.” Dawn said. “I don’t trust him.” Lucas said. “Relax. I won’t let my guard down near him.” Dawn said. “Dawn, come on!” Crystal said. Dawn nodded. “I’ll talk soon.” Dawn said. Lucas sat on the bottom step and Scott sat next to him. Dawn was flipping with the girls in sync. They were doing her popular routine from high school. They were loving it. Kai walked out with the coach and sat on the bleachers opposite Scott and Lucas. “So, what’s the deal with those two guys and Dawn?” Kai asked. “They follow her everywhere. They are like her bodyguards. They are at every practice. They are only not near her if they have a class. By then she’s usually locked in their room studying.” Coach Jansen said. “You said she was scouted. How do you mean?” Kai asked. “She was playing with friends at a court and she was great. She can throw it from more than half a court distance. She was scouted as a cheerleader and was given a position already as well. The tryouts are in a couple days for both basketball and cheerleading. You have to understand, Dawn is an excellent student. She is fast at reading, she is fast at running, she is skilled in so many ways. She is a brave student. All of us teachers received and read her school recommendations. Her principal emailed footage and explained after the incident at a carnival, she chose others to get seen to first. When she went to the hospital, she died and had to be revived. It happened twice. Since then, the principal noticed more determination to protect the other students from bullying. In fact, since the carnival and the rumours of her dying two times. No students were bullied. The bullies were scared of Dawn. You know, a girl literally refused death. And she apparently looked pissed off at them a lot. They all backed down whenever she was near.” Coach Jansen said. “She sounds almost too good to be true.” Kai said. “There’s something else, I don’t know if your father knows. But her foster father ended up being her real dad. But he knows someone tried to kill Dawn when her parents were killed. They are still hunting her. Hence her little goons. Though they are smitten with her. She keeps busy to distract herself from everything. It’s a wonder how she even gets any sleep. She did everything at her old school. And I mean everything.” Coach Jansen said. “Why does it feel like there is going to be a lot of drama if I befriend her?” Kai asked. “Hey, you asked to share her room, I made that happen. You asked to be able to get close to know her, I told you she’s on the team. Now it’s up to you. If you think she is the one for you, then spend time with her. If you need the information for your dad, then tell him. Preferably without her goons. Anyone compliments her and they threaten them.” Coach Jansen said. “This is going to be difficult.” Kai said. “And when you know her, you will see it’s worth it.” Coach Jansen said. “I saw her eyes. Am I dreaming or are they different shades?” Kai asked. “You’re not dreaming. She really is unique.” Coach Jansen said. “Dad asked me to ask you if you are coming to dinner at his tonight?” Kai asked. “Tell him I will get back to him on that. Dawn is coming to get a spare set of keys from me to access the gym after hours.” Coach Jansen said. “Why?” Kai asked. “To study and exercise at the same time.” Coach Jansen said. “She’s determined.” Kai said. Coach Jansen laughed. “That she is. Have fun trying to keep up with her.” Coach Jansen said. He laughed and pat Kai on the back. “Can I automatically get a spot on the team?” Kai asked. “No.” Coach Jansen said. “You’ve seen me play.” Kai said. “You weren’t scouted. Just attend tryouts and you can get close to her on the court at games.” Coach Jansen said. “You’re an ass.” Kai said. “And you’re the pain.” Coach Jansen said. They both laughed. They looked up and saw Dawn looking at them confused. The coach and Kai looked at Dawn. The lights in the gym had started flickering above them. Dawn ran out the door in the dark. She was worried it was a trap. The lights came on to Dawn gone. “f**k, she’s Houdini.” Coach Jansen said. “Girls, where did Dawn go?” Coach Jansen asked. “We will get her. She might have thought it was another attempt!” Lucas called out. They ran out the door to see Dawn running across the field she was chasing a man that was wearing all black. Coach Jansen and Kai watched her as she jumped easily over the fences. “She should do track.” Coach Jansen said. Scott and Lucas were catching up as Dawn tackled the man to the ground. Dawn was visibly talking to him as she leaned on his back talking to him. “Who are you?” Dawn asked. “I am a reporter, I wanted to interview you.” He groaned. Dawn stood up and helped him up. She shook her head and was visibly going off at him.
