Chapter 16

The boys looked shocked. “She’s a skater?” Oscar asked. “She does everything.” Laura said. “Dance?” Milly asked. “Yep.” Laura said. “Sing?” Mary asked. “Everything.” Jessie said. “Damn.” Hannah said. “And you all thought she was horrible. She’s really talented.” Laura said. Laura saw her dad digging a hole in the far corner of the fence. Dawn ran out to Mark. “I’m going to the park to meet Lucas and Scott. I’ll board there for a bit to clear my head.” Dawn said. Mark nodded. “I think I am falling in love with her.” Derek said softly. Every one of the girls looked at him shocked. “You can’t. She’s off limits. It’s Patrick’s cousin.” Jessie said. “She’s not my cousin.” Oscar said. “No, but you were a d**k to her before. She holds grudges.” Jessie said. “Haha sucker.” Derek said. “Shh, she’s coming back.” Mike said. “Hey Dawn.” They said in sync. “Hi.” Dawn said. Dawn walked over. “I’m leaving after I grab a drink. Lucas and Scott are meeting me there.” Dawn said. “The popular boys from school?” Milly asked. Her eyes wide open. “They’ve been friends with Dawn since her first day of school. They sit next to her and follow her everywhere.” Patrick said. “Patrick. We’re going with Dawn. Are you coming?” Jessie asked. “Yeah, dad will be pissed if I don’t go.” Patrick said. “Yeah, Derek and Oscar have already got a crush on her.” Laura said. Dawn looked at Oscar. Disgust was in her expression. “Ew, I’d rather date a toad than a slimy rat.” Dawn said. Dawn walked to the fridge inside. “She didn’t say anything about Derek.” Mike said. “She hasn’t learned more about Derek yet. She will be mean soon, she’s waiting for the ammunition.” Laura said. Laura had a smirk on her face. “What’s that face for?” Derek asked. “You might want to be nice to her.” Laura said. “Of course I would be, but why?” Derek asked. “Last one that tried asking her out, she hit them in the face and it was with her desk tray at school.” Laura said. Derek blinked with wide eyes. “That’s just because she was bullied by boys and learned to fight back.” Jessie said. “She’s a troublemaker. She painted the teacher’s car and got suspended. She also ran out of school with Laura and skipped.” Hannah said. “She had her reasons.” Jessie said protectively. Dawn walked out with a small bag filled with bottles. “What reasons could she have? She’s a troublemaker through and through.” Hannah said. “If you want trouble, I will give you trouble. If you want to talk behind someone’s back. Make sure they aren’t standing in the doorway. If you want to fight, then don’t be a coward and come ask for one. Otherwise shut the f**k up and mind your own business.” Dawn said. Her gaze was staring at Hannah. Her expression gave them the chills. Like she was burning into their souls with just her eyes. Hannah’s heart raced. “Dawn skipped school with me. She wasn’t the only one. I was bullied and about to break down crying so we skipped together. She got into trouble so I didn’t cry in front of everyone.” Laura said. “Look, tension is rising. How about we forget the conversation. At least for now because it’s Laura’s birthday. Why don’t we go, and Laura can stay with her friends and we will be back later. Hopefully when they are gone.” Jessie said. Dawn nodded. “Have a good afternoon, Laura.” Dawn said. “I want to go too.” Laura said. “No. Keep your friends away from Dawn right now.” Patrick said. Laura walked over to Patrick to complain. “Don’t even start with me. They have done nothing but be a b***h to her. Dawn deserves some happiness. She needs to clear her head and having your friends near her will not let that happen. Dad’s orders are we go, and you stay.” Patrick said. He spoke in a whisper but Laura heard every word with anger. “Yes Patrick.” Laura said softly. She turned around to face her friends. “Because of you all, I can’t spend time with my best friend.” Laura cried. Laura ran to Mark crying. Dawn was already out the front door. She didn’t know Laura was crying. The boys had left and followed her to the park while bouncing a basketball on the ground. Dawn looked at the traffic. She picked her board up and ran across without waiting for a car. “DAWN!” Jessie screamed. Dawn ran through the traffic to get to the park. The guys waited until it was safe to cross. Dawn walked away, to Lucas and Scott. Then they saw her hug them before they crossed the road. Dawn put her bag down near them and got on her board with them. She skated around with them doing more ollie’s and jumping. Lucas laughed as Dawn stuck her tongue out and pulled a face at them. They skated a bit longer before they saw Dawn gain speed and go for the bigger ramp.
