A few weeks later, Mr Leving was released on bail and awaiting the trial.
Mr Leving came to clear his things. It was almost lunch time.
Mr Leving saw Dawn walking with Laura to the water bubbler. His anger was at the point of exploding. He watched her walk to class to grab her bag. He walked to his car and put things in it.
Mr Leving reached into his glove box then he walked towards the cafeteria. The bell rang. He waited until he saw Dawn. She didn’t arrive straight away, but he waited. He knew that every day she ate lunch from the cafeteria with Laura and the boys.
Dawn walked around the corner without realising he was there. She was reading her book as Laura spoke.
Patrick noticed Mr Leving and shouted his name. Dawn looked up shocked.
Mr Leving was near Dawn. Patrick started to run but Mr Leving pulled a gun out and aimed it at Patrick. Patrick froze in his steps.
“Not so fast, I need to have a few words with Dawn.” Mr Leving said.
Jessie was near Patrick worried. Mr Leving looked at Dawn in the crowded cafeteria.
“Why would you f**k up my life!” Mr Leving shouted.
“I didn’t do anything! That was you!” Dawn shouted.
“You had your goons assault me and make claims about me!” Mr Leving shouted.
“You assaulted me in front of the class, they saw from the window and helped. You caused this yourself!” Dawn shouted.
“You’re a spoiled slutty brat!” Mr Leving said.
“And you’re a greased up old man on assault and predator charges. Now leave!” Dawn said.
He slapped her hard across the face. Dawn looked up at him. She looked pissed off.
“Big mistake.” Dawn said.
Dawn raised her foot and kicked him hard. He fired the gun just missing her. Dawn hit him hard in the chest and raised her knee to his groin. She elbowed Mr Leving in the face.
Mr Leving tackled Dawn down to the ground and they started fighting over the gun. It was almost on her face until she bit his knuckle. He screamed in pain and she turned the gun to him he grabbed it and tried to yank. The gun fired and they both looked at each other shocked.
“DAWN!” Laura screamed.
Dawn was struggling to get him off her as he bled on her. She held the gun in her shaking hand. She put it down on the chair near them and stepped back.
“Freeze! Put your hands in the air!” A police Officer shouted.
Dawn put her hands up.
“She was defending herself!” Laura shouted.
“Sorry, we have to obey the law.” The officer said.
“He assaulted her in the classroom and there is a file. He just tried attacking her with a gun and she fought back. Surely you can’t blame her for defending herself.” Patrick snapped.
“We arrived to her holding a gun before putting it down, a dead body and there is blood on her. We have to follow the law.” The officer said.
They handcuffed her and dragged her out of the school. Everyone watched as police dragged a cheerleader covered in blood to the back seat of the cop car.
“You were there, last time, you heard he was fired. He’s in the school and you arrest me. This is a sadistic joke.” Dawn said.
“I know, we will get your statement at the station. You did just kill someone so I have to follow the rules.” Officer Rio said.
They locked her in the back of the car. They came back to wait for forensics. Patrick was already on the phone to Mark and then Tate. They hurried as soon as they can. Mark brough a copy of the police report and the restraining order that is meant to be in effect. He rushed over there and saw Dawn in the cop car still while they checked the scene.
The lights flashing above her in the car. A crowd gathering around her as they wheeled Mr Leving out in a body bag.
“You!” Mark snapped.
“Sir, calm down!” The sergeant said.
“Officer Rio was there the last time Mr Leving attacked her. He helped us file a restraining order against him. Mr Leving wasn’t supposed to be back in the school while Dawn was here. He clearly violated the restraining order. From what I hear there are many witnesses stating she was attacked first. He pulled the gun, then fired the first shot.” Mark snapped.
“Is this true Officer Rio?” The sergeant asked.
“Yes sir.” Officer Rio said.
“Mr Leving was a predator and tried attacking her in front of the class. He assaulted her in front of the class. They all gave their statements and they all said the same thing. I have the report here.” Mark said.
Mark handed the report to the sergeant. The sergeant read everything cautiously and saw the signatures of their captain and officer Rio.
“Why would you handcuff her instead of offering assistance to her, if you knew she was the victim?” The sergeant asked.
“Because she still killed him in cold blood.” Officer Rio said.
“Dawn didn’t mean to. She was fighting the gun away from her, the trigger was fired without intention to fire it.” Derek said.
“You sound like a lawyer.” Officer Rio said.
“My father works for the District Attorney. I know the law. She shouldn’t be handcuffed. At the most, she should be escorted to the cop car without cuffs. She wasn’t the attacker. You will find the gun had his prints as well as hers and everyone can confirm he shot the wall behind her before he tried to kill her. He aimed the gun at Patrick for trying to protect her.” Derek said.
The sergeant looked pissed off at Officer Rio.
“You arrested the victim!” The sergeant shouted.
“I was doing my job.” Officer Rio said.
“Your job isn’t to arrest victims and innocent people. It’s to get the whole story and then help. Uncuff her!” The sergeant shouted.
Officer Rio stormed off to the car. Everyone watched as he dragged her out of the car. She fell to the ground and he picked her up roughly by her arm.
“Ooh I’m about to hit him, she’s an orphan from an abused background before our house. You need to f*****g stop him from manhandling her.” Mark said.
His tone cold.
“Officer Rio! Stop dragging her roughly!” The sergeant shouted.
“She’s an orphan? I thought she was Patrick’s cousin.” Derek said.
“Patrick said that to hide her background from everyone to make her feel safe. There was no other way to explain her living with us without revealing her secret. She was beaten when she arrived at ours.” Mark explained.
