Dawn smiled an evil smile slowly. Which usually would make them laugh. But the fact she was slow to make the smile, made it creepier. The guys laughed.
They all sat down talking about random s**t. Then Scott saw the jewellery box hidden in the wardrobe.
“Ooh, someone got jewellery.” Scott teased.
Jessie ignored it and Scott read the card. Scott laughed and then opened the box.
“You are so romantically smitten by Dawn.” Scott teased.
He turned the box around and showed the gift. The guys gasped when they looked at it.
“I don’t care. Make fun of me.” Jessie said.
“He added a photo of Hawkeye inside the heart.” Mark said.
Scott gasped and pulled it out. He lifted it up to the window.
“Oh s**t, he did too. That must have been expensive.” Scott said.
Jessie just held Dawn’s hand and ignored them. Everyone looked at the heart then Scott put it back. He saw a letter.
“Dawn, why is there a letter from the school in here?” Scott asked.
Dawn slowly turned her head with wide eyes and shook her head.
“She’s shaking her head. Don’t read it.” Jessie said.
“Too late.” Scott said.
Jessie looked quickly at Scott.
“Put it down.” Jessie said.
“Dawn, does anyone know?” Scott asked.
“Know what?” Mark asked.
Scott looked at Dawn with a confused look.
“Why haven’t you told anyone?” Scott asked.
Jessie looked at Dawn. Her gaze was on Scott.
“Put it down for now.” Jessie said.
“No, Mark needs to know.” Scott said.
“Not yet, her chest is rising quicker, her heart is racing. She doesn’t want anyone to know yet. So put it down and shut up.” Jessie said.
“Why? It’s great news.” Scott said.
“Dawn, can we find out?” Mark asked.
Dawn hesitated, she kept her gaze on Scott and gestured for a pen. Jessie unlocked his phone.
“She’s writing the answer.” Jessie said.
[No, I haven’t decided so I won’t tell anyone.] – Dawn wrote.
Jessie read out her answer.
“Dawn, it sounds like you don’t have a choice. They worded it like it is happening.” Scott said.
“What’s happening?” Lucas asked.
“Dawn, I’m going to tell them. When your ass is better you can kick my ass.” Scott said.
Dawn shook her head.
“Dawn is graduating next year, they are bumping her again. She’s going to be graduating with Lucas and I.” Scott said.
They looked at Dawn shocked.
“If you had a choice, why would you not accept?” Mark asked.
Dawn was typing.
[Laura, last bump made her hate me. And if I get bumped again, she will completely hate me.] – Dawn wrote.
Jessie read it.
“Well, that’s up to her to struggle with.” Mark said.
[I don’t want that hanging on my head.] – Dawn wrote.
Jessie read it. Scott put the letter back.
“What’s this letter?” Scott asked.
Jessie looked.
“Put that down, Dawn hasn’t even opened it yet. It was a letter from her family.” Jessie snapped.
Jessie got up and stormed to the wardrobe. He grabbed the briefcase from the shelf and the letter from Scott then stormed over to Dawn and put them next to her.
“Sorry, I just wanted to snoop for fun.” Scott said.
“Don’t mess with her personal things.” Jessie said.
He sounded really angry. Mark looked at him then noticed the photo.
“Dawn, you got her prom picture?” Mark asked.
Dawn nodded slightly.
“Can I look?” Mark asked.
Dawn hesitated but nodded. Jessie grabbed it carefully for him. Mark held it in his hands. Patrick noticed his dad was getting upset looking at the photo.
“I remember this night. She was prom queen, as well as she was given an award that none of us had heard of before. They made it for her. She was on stage singing and dancing. She stole the whole prom unintentionally. I think I still have the video. My uncle was chaperone and recorded her. He was mesmerised by her voice.” Mark said.
A few tears fell as he stared at her photo. Dawn leaned up and hugged him. Mark put his arms around her.
“You kept cheating because you loved her.” Patrick said.
Mark nodded.
“More that I loved Lilith. Every time she was in the room, I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Just like Dawn has all of your eyes. She’s like her mother with everything she does.” Mark said softly.
Dawn squeezed him tighter.
“Dawn, relax, you are looking pale.” Patrick said.
Mark turned and looked.
“You have blood on your lip.” Mark said softly.
“Dawn, gargle and spit.” Jessie said.
Dawn leaned back and grabbed the bucket. She gargled and spat until the blood disappeared when she spat. Jessie got up to clean the bucket out. Dawn kept her eyes on Mark.
[Do you think I could watch any videos you have of her?] – Dawn wrote.
Mark grabbed the phone to read the message.
“I will look through our storage and find the videos of her for you to watch when you are better.” Mark said.
