EP:4 **THE WEIGHT OF FORGIVENESS**

1016 Words
The morning after the storm felt strange. The air in the house was quieter, softer, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath. Kade didn’t speak much. He moved through the rooms like a man afraid to break the fragile peace. Selene sat quietly in her room, the air between us taut with unspoken words. Lara was gone. The shadow she had cast on our lives had vanished — but her traces still lingered, bitter and sharp. And there we were — all of us, scarred by what had happened. --- I woke up to the sound of the baby crying. Our daughter. My little girl. She wasn’t just a child — she was a piece of us, fragile and whole at once. Kade was already there, her tiny body cradled in his arms. His eyes were red. He looked at her like she was the most precious thing in existence. And in that moment… I saw the man I once loved, broken but still standing. He didn’t notice me watching. His voice was low, soft. “I’m sorry, Y/N,” he said to her, not to me. And my heart broke again. I slipped closer. He looked up then, startled. “I said I was sorry,” he whispered, his voice heavy with regret. “For everything.” I didn’t know if that was enough. --- Later that day, Selene appeared at the living room doorway. Her eyes were red — she hadn’t spoken to either of us since the night Lara had left. “Kade,” she said softly, “I want to say I’m sorry too.” Kade turned to her, surprise flickering in his expression. “You have nothing to apologize for,” he said gently. “No,” she said quietly. “For trusting someone so easily. For letting her hurt us. For not speaking up sooner. For everything.” Kade reached out to her hand. “You were my sister. I should have protected you too. I failed.” Her eyes filled with tears. “You protected her. You didn’t protect me.” That hit him. He lowered his gaze. “I know.” I watched them silently. I had never imagined this — the three of us, standing here, tangled in the wreckage of what used to be. --- That evening, Kade came to me. He didn’t touch me at first. He just stood in the doorway, watching our daughter sleep in my arms. Finally, he spoke. “I want to make this right.” I looked up, unsure. “How?” “By being the man I promised I’d be. By protecting you both. By never letting this happen again.” I wanted to believe him. But trust isn’t rebuilt in a single moment — it’s painstaking, slow. Still… I nodded. --- Days passed. Kade tried. He came home earlier. He helped with the baby. He spoke softly to me, as if afraid to break something fragile. Selene began to talk to me too — apologizing again and again, trying to bridge the silence that had grown between us. It felt strange, but good. Like breathing after being underwater for too long. --- But peace never lasts forever. One night, I overheard Kade on the phone. His voice was sharp, tense. “No. She can’t be allowed back… I won’t let her destroy us again.” My heart thudded painfully. Lara. She was still here, somewhere. I stepped closer to the doorway, listening. “I won’t forgive her,” he said firmly. “She won’t touch my family again.” That was the first time in months I saw anger return to his eyes. But there was something else there too — fear. --- I couldn’t sleep that night. The baby cried softly in her crib, and I lay beside Kade, staring at the ceiling. His breathing was steady, but I knew his mind wasn’t. He shifted beside me. “I love you,” he said quietly. I turned to him. “Do you?” “Yes,” he whispered. “More than anything. I was blind. But I’m not anymore.” I wanted to believe him. I wanted to reach out and trust him. But a part of me still hurt too deeply. --- The next morning, Selene knocked on my door. Her face was pale. “Can we talk?” she asked. I nodded. She stepped in, sitting beside me. “I was wrong,” she said simply. “I should have stood by you. Against her. Against all of it.” I looked at her, unsure if I could trust her words. “Selene…” I began. “I know,” she interrupted. “I know I hurt you too. But I’m asking for forgiveness — for her, for me, for Kade. Please.” Her voice cracked, and I realized we were all crying now — sisters, broken by love and betrayal. I reached out, touching her hand. “We’ll try.” And that was all we could promise. --- The weeks became months. Kade worked hard to prove himself. Selene tried to rebuild her relationship with me. And Lara… she disappeared, leaving only the ghost of her whispers behind. One night, Kade came to me with our daughter in his arms. His eyes were tired but steady. “She’s ours,” he said softly. “Our little miracle.” I looked at her sleeping, her tiny chest rising and falling, and I felt something shift inside me. Forgiveness wasn’t instant. But it was beginning to grow. Kade knelt beside me, placing our daughter in my arms. “I’ll fight for you both every day,” he whispered. “No matter what.” And for the first time in months… I believed him. --- That night, Selene sat beside us. She whispered softly, “Family… is worth fighting for.” And I realized she was right. Because in the wreckage of betrayal, in the pain of broken trust, something remained — something worth saving. Love. Even when it hurts. --- END OF CHAPTER 4...
