EP:2**THE POISONED SILENCE**

The words had barely left her lips, but they haunted Y/N in the darkness. *Do you trust her more than me?* That night, the house seemed heavier. Rain tapped softly on the windows, drumming a slow, relentless rhythm against her thoughts. She lay beside Kade, but there was a gulf between them she couldn’t bridge. His arm rested loosely on her waist, but the warmth she’d once known was gone, replaced with a quiet tension neither of them spoke about. Kade was silent. His breathing was steady, untroubled, as though the question had never been asked. But Y/N could feel it pressing into him, a hidden weight. She turned her face toward him, eyes searching. His closed eyelids gave nothing away. She sighed softly and turned away, staring at the ceiling. Sleep did not come easily. Her thoughts circled endlessly: Lara’s smirk, Selene’s warning, Kade’s denial, and his silence. She wondered if silence was denial, or worse — indifference. Days slipped past, and the silence between them deepened. It was not the comfortable quiet of lovers who had grown used to each other. It was something colder, heavier — a silence that spoke of distance, of trust breaking slowly. Kade buried himself in work, retreating into the fortress of his office. Meetings dragged long into the night. Phone calls came in without pause. Y/N felt invisible in her own home. She withdrew, her laughter fading, her words becoming fewer. When they passed each other, their eyes didn’t meet. They existed like two strangers inhabiting the same house. Selene watched from a distance. Her sisterly instincts burned quietly. She noticed Lara’s subtle intrusions, the way she lingered, the way she smiled too knowingly at Kade. But Kade never noticed. Or refused to see. To him, Lara was a friend in need — nothing more. Y/N knew the danger Selene saw. But she clung to the belief that Kade’s love for her was unwavering. Perhaps it was that belief which kept her silent, even as the distance grew. **— Selene’s Visit ** The rain that afternoon was relentless. Selene arrived without warning, her steps purposeful as she entered the house. She seemed almost certain of what she would find. Her boots clicked against the marble floor. Y/N heard her before she saw her. The air grew tense. Then Selene’s sharp voice cut through the quiet: “How can you let her do this?” Y/N froze. She stepped toward the living room. There, she saw Kade crouched beside Lara, his fingers gently pressing against a small cut on Lara’s arm. Lara leaned toward him, her expression calm, almost teasing. Kade looked up, startled, and his eyes briefly met Y/N’s — a look that said *trust me.* Selene’s voice rose again, accusing. “She’s hurt herself, and you let her?” Kade didn’t answer. Instead, he gave Y/N a faint glance and returned to tending Lara’s arm. Y/N’s chest tightened. Y/N stepped forward. “Selene… let’s not fight.” She placed her hand softly on Selene’s arm. “Come with me.” Selene hesitated. Her gaze shifted between Y/N and Kade, suspicion written all over her face. Y/N gently tugged her toward the bedroom. “Please. Let’s talk.” Selene followed reluctantly. Inside Y/N’s bedroom, the air was thick with tension. Y/N pulled a set of freshly bought clothes from her wardrobe and spread them across the bed. Selene’s frown deepened. “These are beautiful, Y/N… but they’re yours?” “Yes,” Y/N replied softly. “I bought them for myself, not for Lara.” Selene’s gaze lingered on her. “You trust him, don’t you?” Y/N hesitated. “I want to. I want to believe in him.” They both stayed silent for a moment. The soft hum of rain filled the space. Y/N continued, her voice low. “Selene… you should rest. Please.” Selene’s lips pressed into a thin line, then she nodded slowly. But the unease in her eyes did not fade. --- The muffled sound of voices reached them from the living room. Selene’s tone was sharp, but quiet. Y/N stepped toward the door, curiosity and dread twisting in her stomach. Selene followed. From the hallway, they overheard Selene speaking again. “Kade, this isn’t right. Lara is—” Kade’s voice cut through her words, firm and cold. “Who let you in my house?” Selene froze. Kade stepped toward her, his eyes hard. “Did you come all this way just to ruin me and Y/N’s relationship? Just get out of my house.” Selene looked at him, shock and pain mingled in her gaze. Y/N stepped forward instinctively, placing a hand on Selene’s shoulder. Selene’s hand found Y/N’s. “Let’s go,” she murmured. Before Y/N could move, Kade’s grip closed around her hand, pulling her toward him. His voice was low but unyielding. “She is my wife. No one can take her away from me.” Y/N struggled. “Kade… please—” His eyes locked on Selene. “No. This ends now. Leave.” Selene stepped back, her face pale, her breath shaky. “Kade…” she whispered, her voice breaking. Without another word, she turned and walked away, the sound of rain swallowing her footsteps. Y/N stood frozen, trembling. “Kade… you betrayed her.” Kade’s eyes softened. “I betrayed her for you,” he said quietly. “You are mine. Only mine.” His words wrapped around her like a chain. She wanted to pull away, but instead, she let herself be drawn into his gaze. --- The house was silent again, heavier than before. The confrontation had left wounds deeper than either of them admitted. Y/N retreated to her room. Her mind replayed the moment again and again. Kade’s fierce protectiveness, Selene’s pain, the unspoken truth between them. Kade remained in the living room, staring at the door she had closed. His fists clenched. He loved her — deeply, fiercely — but his loyalty to her had shattered the bond with his sister. Selene drove away in the rain, tears mixing with the droplets on her face. She was shattered, but her resolve hardened. This was not over. Somewhere in the house, Lara smiled quietly. Her plan was unfolding exactly as she had intended. The seed of doubt had grown into a poisonous vine, and it was only beginning to spread. --- END OF CHAPTER:2
