Sabrina told me to let him go, and I could’ve laughed, but the sound would’ve come out bitter and hollow. Let him go? After what he did? Maybe it was the principle of it all, the idea that if I did nothing, he’d walk away thinking he could do whatever he wanted. Maybe it was the furious thirst for revenge that surged through me the moment I saw him hit my wife and shove her into his car, like she was some disposable object. I chuckled darkly to myself, the kind of laughter that tastes like ash. My wife—someone hit my wife and had the audacity to kidnap her, and I was supposed to sing Kumbaya because the man was poor? How was that fair? My heart raced with anger, and I stalked towards the dungeon—yeah, cliché, but that’s what my men called it, and the name had stuck. I threw the door open so hard that the little guy sitting at the table jumped. Lohan, my right-hand man, was already there, hammering the kid with questions. He met my gaze, and I could see the apprehension flickering in his eyes. The answers he had pulled from the guy lined up with what Sabrina had said, but somehow it didn’t feel like enough. A part of me knew that even killing this man wouldn’t quench the fire that burned inside me. “…he had been following her since the morning when she left home. I’m sorry, boss, if I had caught him sooner—” Lohan’s voice faltered, but before he could finish, I felt a surge of anger bubble up. I punched him hard in the jaw, the satisfying c***k echoing in the room. He hadn’t seen that coming, and honestly, I couldn’t blame him for that. I was furious. “Do you know what I hear at parties, Lohan? That your girls are untouchable. You work for the blood collector—nobody lays a finger on them. I see how they flinch when they think they’re caught staring too long. But my own wife?” I paused, rolling up my sleeves. I didn’t want anything holding me back, least of all blood stains on my shirt. “You let her get tailed and taken hostage? What the hell were you doing?” “Boss, I—” “Not here, Lohan.” He shifted uncomfortably, and I turned my focus to the man tied to the chair. I smiled, but it wasn’t a friendly smile. “Sorry about that, I haven’t introduced myself. I’m Amir Alec, the husband of the woman you so generously abducted. I just have one question: did the person who sent you here insure you for damages?” The guy blinked at me, wide-eyed. I motioned for Lohan to lift him, and he did, leaving the man dangling in front of me like a ragdoll. I towered over him—my height felt like a silent warning. “I didn’t make an enemy out of you. You could’ve come after me directly, but no, you picked a defenseless woman. A five-foot-four-inch woman. Do you have no shame?” “Mr. Alec, you have to understand, I didn’t know she was yours! I would’ve never touched her if I knew!” He was begging, desperation spilling out of him. “She’s not a possession. I’m offended you’d refer to her that way. She’s my wife, and you caused her harm.” My voice was calm, but the storm brewing beneath it was undeniable. “Now I’ll take it back tenfold. If you’re still alive after that, I’ll take ten times more.” I breathed deeply, holding back the urge to let loose my fury. I couldn’t touch him—not while Sabrina was in my thoughts. I motioned to Lohan, and he got the message. The man’s screams erupted into the air, but they didn’t faze me. They weren’t loud enough, and I felt like my own heart was racing in sync with his. I craved the feeling of his pulse beneath my fingers, of watching life drain from him. Lohan looked at me, gauging if he’d done enough damage. I flicked my fingers, signaling him to keep going. It wasn’t enough yet. The blood pooling around him didn’t tell me if he was suffering; it just made me want more. I needed to see the pain on his face, to know he understood the consequences of what he’d done. Then there was a loud thump, and my heart dropped as Sabrina walked through the door. What was she doing here? She wasn’t supposed to find out yet; I wanted to sit her down, explain everything while she was recovering. She shouldn’t have pulled out her IV and walked in like this. She looked pale, wearing a hospital gown that barely covered her. She swayed slightly, and my heart twisted at the sight. “Sabrina, you shouldn’t be here,” I said, rushing toward her. “What’s happening, Amir?” Her voice was soft but edged with confusion. “I heard… screams. I thought something terrible was going on.” “It is, but you need to go back. This isn’t safe,” I insisted, trying to shield her from the nightmare unfolding behind me. She stepped closer, determination set on her face. “No. I won’t just stand by while you do… this.” I sighed, torn between anger and concern. “You don’t understand what he knows. What he can do. This is necessary.” “Necessary?” She shook her head, disbelief flashing in her eyes. “What’s necessary about torturing him? You’re better than this, Amir. You’re better than the monster he is.” “I have to protect you,” I said, my voice dropping. “But at what cost?” she shot back. Her words hit hard, and I felt the anger slipping away, replaced by an icy dread. “You’re right, but… what if I don’t stop?” Sabrina stepped closer, her eyes fierce. “Then you’ll be lost, Amir. I can’t lose you to this darkness.” I glanced at the man, the blood, the chaos that surrounded us. “I want him to suffer for what he did to you.” She looks at me shocked with a hint of betrayal showing on her face. “You promised,” “I did no such thing.” “You said you wouldn’t,” “I said it’s okay if that was your wish,” “You can’t do this, this is wrong,” she says with indignation moving towards me. I sigh frustrated. What about this do you not get? “He kidn*pped you.” I say to remind her. “So what you’ll kill him for it?” “I said nothing about murder, you need to be careful throwing that word around, thats quite the loaded accusation.” “Amir…” she says her lips quivering. I know if I keep talking to her, I won’t be able to go through with it. “You should go back to rest, you can’t be on your feet already.” I turn to Lohan who up till then was still holding the man by his collar. He lets him fall looking a bit sheepish. “Get Elliot to take her back to her room, she shouldn’t be walking already, and get the doctor to make sure everything is still okay with her.” “Amir, please don’t, you promised.” I laugh awkwardly, “you can’t expect that to still be valid in a scenario like this,” of course I did, but the promise is null and she knew it when it comes to her, that was my one exception. “You know,” I say. She swallows and nods, eyes getting misty and turning away. All the resolve in me goes out, as Elliot arrives with Lohan. “Lohan finish up here, Elliot we won’t be needing you, I’ll take my wife myself.” As I leave, I think, that’s the thing they don’t tell you about having a weakness. You lose having your own will. ••• “Are you sure Lohan is not still going to hurt him after you’ve left?” I ask again. Patiently taking a deep breath he replies, “Not unless I told him to,” as he helps me get back on the bed and starts adjusting my pillow. “I’m glad you didn’t go through with it, he could just go to jail now. I know what he did was wrong but I really appreciate you listening to me.” He smiles and the doctor walks in to re insert my IV, I’m sleepy again. “Wait, can you not do that? I don’t want to fall asleep again. I have a lot to do.” Amir laughs good naturedly, “no you don’t, doctor you can just do whatever she needs.” “No please, I promise I won’t get out of bed again. Pleeeaaaaseee…” I hit him with my best puppy dog eyes which just makes him laugh. The doctor says as far as I stay in bed and rest and only rest I can be up. Amir sits next to me, and its almost nice, if I don’t think about what would’ve happened to that man if I didn’t walk in. My phone rings it’s Leah, I forgot about the show amidst all this commotion. I pick up expecting her to be beside herself screaming at me but she sounds almost happy. “Sabrina, we missed you at the show today, but we heard about your accident and the new intern you sent here to handle everything did a good job, so I guess you’re off the hook. It was truly an amazing show, so thank you or whatever. Call me once you recover I can’t wait to start prepping for next season. Ciao.” She clicks off, and I stare stunned of course typical Leah to not give you a chance to get a word in, but it sounds like if all worked out, I don’t know how Amir did it but I’m just glad it went smoothly. I drop my phone and turn to him, in the end everything worked out with the show and it proved to him that the late nights weren’t in vain. He wasn’t too keen on Leah Eastwood after meeting the woman a few times prior and I honestly can’t blame him. I knew we were going to have the conversation about the house and I wasn’t winning that definitely.
