Chapter Seven – Trial by Fire

503 Words
The night began with laughter around the campfires and ended in blood. I woke to the sound of distant howls low, sharp, wrong. Not Kian’s wolves. Intruders. By the time I stumbled from my tent, the rogue camp was chaos. Warriors shifted mid-run, silver claws flashing in the moonlight. The scent of fear and iron filled the air. “Kian!” I shouted. He was already there, shifting back from his wolf, chest heaving, eyes blazing red. “Border patrol’s down. Hunters from Silverfang they’ve found us.” My heart stopped. My old pack. The forest erupted with crashing bodies and snarls. For a moment I froze, torn between fury and terror. Then Kian’s command cut through the noise: “Get to the ridge and hold them off. Anyone who crosses kill them.” I saw him glance at me, a silent question in his eyes. Are you ready? I nodded. “I’m done running.” The power rose before I could think. Silver light flared from my hands, trailing behind me as I sprinted toward the ridge. Three hunters broke through the trees wolves in armor, blades gleaming. I let instinct take over. The ground split beneath their paws, vines snapping up like whips. The magic inside me wasn’t gentle anymore it was wild and furious, answering every pulse of my heartbeat. The hunters fell, bound by glowing roots that burned where they touched. I felt their fear like a taste of smoke. “Moon help us,” one whispered. “She’s the cursed one.” “No,” I said, voice steady. “I’m the chosen one.” A sudden snarl snapped my focus. A Silverfang Beta lunged from the dark Damian’s lieutenant, the same man who had dragged me by the hair during training years ago. He swung his blade, but Kian intercepted, blocking the strike with his claws. Sparks flew. “Go!” Kian roared. “Finish this!” I raised my hands, power flooding every nerve. The light blazed brighter than I’d ever managed before pure, searing moonfire. The Beta screamed as it struck, the sound echoing through the forest until nothing but ash remained. Silence followed. The invaders fled. When it was over, I collapsed to my knees, trembling. The world tilted, and Kian caught me before I hit the ground. His arms were strong around me, his voice low and steady. “You saved them. You saved us.” “I thought I was cursed,” I murmured. He brushed a thumb across my cheek, smearing dirt and blood away. “Maybe curses are just power misunderstood.” For a moment the war around us didn’t exist only the warmth of his touch and the strange pull between our hearts. Then he looked toward the horizon, eyes darkening. “Silverfang won’t stop now. Damian will come for you himself.” I swallowed hard. “Then let him.” The moonlight shimmered over us as I whispered, “Next time, he’ll find the Alpha he rejected.”
