After three weeks of thoughtful courtship, Liam finally asks the question I've been dreading and anticipating in equal measure.
We're walking along the campus lake, autumn leaves crunching underfoot, when he stops and turns to face me. The late afternoon sun catches the flecks in his eyes, and I can see the careful consideration he's put into this moment.
"Penelope." His voice is soft with sincerity. "I know you've been hurt before."
My stomach tightens with anticipation. We've been dancing around this conversation for weeks, both of us aware of where his patient attention is leading.
"But I want you to know that you're safe with me." He takes my hands in his larger ones, his touch warm and steady. "I'd like to court you properly, if you'll have me."
