Chapter Three: Whispers of the Past

597 Words
The night was slipping into its quieter hours, when the clinking of glasses and the whirl of gowns gave way to hushed conversations in shadowed corners. Selene lingered at the edge of the balcony, watching the city lights scatter across the horizon like shards of memory. The ballroom behind her pulsed with warmth, but she needed the cool bite of the night air to steady herself. And then, he found her. Adrian’s footsteps were soft, but she felt him before she heard him—the same way a storm announces itself in the air, even before the first strike of lightning. “You disappeared,” he said, his voice carrying a note of curiosity rather than reproach. “I needed a moment,” she replied lightly, resting her gloved hands on the stone rail. “Crowds have a way of suffocating me.” He studied her, his eyes narrowing slightly as though trying to peel back her layers. “There’s something about you…” His words trailed off, hesitant, unguarded in a way that unsettled her. “Forgive me, but—have we met before?” Selene’s heart seized, though her face remained the picture of calm amusement. “I doubt it. I’m sure I would have remembered a man like you.” Adrian smiled faintly, but his gaze sharpened. “You remind me of someone. Someone I lost a long time ago.” The world tilted. The girl he spoke of was her. The girl he believed dead. And for a fleeting, reckless heartbeat, she wanted to tell him the truth. To see the relief flood his eyes. To feel his arms around her again without secrets. But the darkness inside her reminded her why she had returned. Why she could never let him know. “Perhaps,” she said softly, “I only resemble a ghost from your past.” His jaw tightened. “Maybe. But the resemblance is uncanny. She was…” He faltered, as though her memory still carried the power to wound. “She was fire and light. I’ve never forgotten her.” Selene swallowed hard, forcing a cool smile onto trembling lips. “Then she was fortunate, to be remembered so tenderly.” Silence hung between them, heavy with unspoken truths. Adrian’s eyes lingered on her as though he could will her to confess. But instead, Selene shifted the subject, slipping deeper into the lie. “You flatter me with your comparisons, Mr. D’Angelo. But perhaps we should let the dead rest.” Adrian studied her for another long moment, then inclined his head. “Perhaps. And yet…” He stepped closer, his voice dropping lower, intimate. “There’s something in your eyes. Something that feels alive with secrets.” Selene forced herself to meet his gaze, though inside her pulse thundered. If he kept looking at her like that, if he kept peeling away at the edges of her mask, her carefully woven revenge would unravel before it even began. So she smiled—cold, sweet, dangerous. “Then maybe it is safer not to look too closely, Mr. D’Angelo. Some secrets are poison to the soul.” He didn’t flinch. Instead, his lips curved in the faintest shadow of a smile. “And yet, poison has its allure.” The words lingered between them like smoke, curling and clinging, impossible to dispel. Selene turned back to the city lights, hiding the storm in her eyes. Adrian thought she was a ghost’s reflection. But in truth, she was both ghost and storm— and she had come to destroy him.
