Chapter Nine: The Monster in the Light

459 Words
Adrian hadn’t slept. He wandered his penthouse like a caged animal, his fists bruised from striking walls, his throat raw from silent curses. Every thought returned to her. Selene. The woman who had kissed him like salvation. The woman who had lied like a serpent. And yet—damn his heart—he still wanted her. He stared at the whiskey glass trembling in his hand, amber liquid spilling down his wrist. He had sworn never to be his father: ruthless, cold, incapable of love. Yet here he was, broken, begging ghosts for answers. When dawn bled across the city, a knock shattered the silence. Vincenzo D’Angelo entered, silver hair slicked back, his cane striking the marble with deliberate rhythm. His smile was the same as always: polished, poisonous. “My son,” Vincenzo drawled. “You look… unwell.” Adrian’s laugh was bitter. “I found her. The woman you wanted me to keep close. She’s been digging into our past. Into your past.” Vincenzo’s eyes glinted, the amusement of a predator cornering prey. “And now you know why I tolerated her. I was curious how long it would take before you realized she was playing you.” Adrian’s jaw clenched. “She wasn’t playing me. Not at first.” “Love makes fools of men,” Vincenzo said smoothly, pouring himself a drink as though the empire’s foundations weren’t shaking. “But don’t you see? This is the brilliance of it. She came for vengeance, and in the process, she gave us power. The girl belongs to us now—because her heart betrayed her mission.” Adrian slammed his fist on the table, rattling the glass. “You destroyed her family. You burned her life to ashes. And you want me to cage her? To make her yours?” Vincenzo’s gaze turned cold, stripped of its polish. “Everything I do, I do for you. For this empire. Sentiment is weakness. She is weakness. If you can’t cut her from your heart, then you don’t deserve to lead.” The words struck like knives. For the first time, Adrian saw his father not as a man to inherit, but as the monster who had poisoned everything he touched. And Selene—Selene wasn’t the enemy. She was the collateral. That night, Adrian stood alone on his balcony, staring down at the city. The truth was unbearable: He loved the woman who came to destroy him. And he hated the man he was destined to become. Somewhere in the shadows, Selene wept in her own silence, her heart breaking under the weight of her secret. Two souls bound by fire and betrayal, circling closer to ruin. The darkness was no longer alluring. It was inevitable.
