Chapter two
As Maya disappeared into the crowd, Ethan couldn't help but smile unconsciously. The collision that had ruined his suit had brought him more than just a chance encounter – it had brought him a spark of intrigue. He watched the way she navigated the wet streets with a quiet determination, her shoulders set against the rain. For a moment, he'd seen beyond the exhaustion and stress that lined her face, and glimpsed a glimmer of resilience that he purely admired.
Ethan pulled out his phone and dialed a number, his mind already racing with possibilities. "Rachel, I need you to look into someone," he said, his voice firm but controlled. "Maya Rivers. Find out everything you can about her – her jobs, her classes, her financial situation... everything you can get."
As he waited for Rachel to confirm, Ethan's eyes lingered on the spot where Maya had vanished into the rain. He had a feeling that this chance encounter might just be the start of something interesting. And he was always drawn to interesting stuffs or people.
The rain began to pour down harder, drumming against the pavement, but Ethan didn't notice. He was already planning his next move, his mind working overtime to weave Maya Rivers into his world. Little did he know, their lives were about to intersect in ways neither of them could have predicted.
With the call ended, Ethan slipped his phone back into his pocket, the damp fabric of his suit clinging to his skin. He smiled to himself, a plan forming. He would find Maya Rivers, and he would make sure their paths crossed again. Soon.
The bookstore's door creaked open, and a young woman, shivering in the rain, stepped inside. Ethan's eyes met hers, and for a moment, they just stared. Then, with a nod, he gestured toward the coffee shop, offering her a warm smile. "You're shivering. Would you like a cup of coffee?"
As the woman nodded, Ethan's thoughts drifted back to Maya. He wondered if she'd make it to her night class on time, if she'd find a way to pay that electricity bill, and what she'd think if she knew he was already looking for her.
The storm outside was just beginning, and Ethan was ready to face it head-on. After all, he'd always been a man who took control of his destiny. And right now, his destiny seemed to be named Maya Rivers.
As he waited for his coffee, Ethan's mind wandered to his business empire. He had built Carter Enterprises from scratch, turning it into a global powerhouse through sheer force of will. But despite his success, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. Maybe it was the connection he'd felt with Maya, or maybe it was the realization that there was more to life than just deals and boardrooms.
The coffee shop was warm and cozy, filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the soft hum of conversation. Ethan took a sip of his coffee, feeling the warmth spread through his chilled bones. He glanced at his watch, noting the time. He had a meeting in an hour, but he didn't feel like rushing. For once, he wanted to savor the moment, to enjoy the quiet before the storm.
As he sat there, lost in thought, the woman who had entered the bookstore earlier approached him. "Excuse me, sir," she said, her voice hesitant. "I couldn't help but notice you're sitting alone. Would you mind if I joined you?"
Ethan looked up, surprised. He wasn't used to people approaching him like this, without an agenda or a hidden motive. For a moment, he hesitated, unsure of what to do. But something about the woman's smile put him at ease. "Not at all," he said, gesturing to the empty chair across from him. "Please, join me."
The woman smiled, and Ethan noticed the faint lines of exhaustion around her eyes. She looked like she'd been up all night, like Maya. Maybe they had more in common than he thought.
"I'm Sophia," she said, extending her hand.
"Ethan," he replied, shaking it.
As they chatted, Ethan found himself drawn to Sophia's warmth and kindness. She was a writer, working on her first novel, and her passion for storytelling was infectious. For a while, Ethan forgot about Maya, forgot about his business empire, and just enjoyed the conversation.
But as the rain began to let up, Sophia glanced at her watch, her expression apologetic. "I'm so sorry, but I have a meeting with my editor. I should probably get going."
Ethan nodded, feeling a pang of disappointment. "It was lovely meeting you, Sophia. Good luck with your book."
As Sophia left, Ethan couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder. Two chance encounters in one day? That was unusual, even for him. He wondered what other surprises the day might hold, and whether Maya Rivers would be one of them.
With a smile, Ethan stood up, shaking off the rain from his suit. It was time to get back to work, time to find out more about the mysterious Maya Rivers. And he knew just the person to help him do it.
He pulled out his phone and dialed Rachel's number again. "Rachel, I need that information ASAP. I want to know everything about Maya Rivers, and I want to know it now."
As he walked out of the bookstore, Ethan felt a sense of anticipation building inside him. He had a feeling that his life was about to change in ways he couldn't even imagine. And he couldn't wait to see what came next.
The rain had slowed to a drizzle, casting a misty veil over the city. Ethan took a deep breath, feeling the cool air fill his lungs. It was going to be an interesting day.
