First it felt like a nightmare, then She heard a deafening high pitched tinkling sound in her ear as she slowly opened her eyes.
The plain white walls of the hospital room and the bright lighting were blinding her eyes to tears.
There was a simple bed, medical equipment neatly arranged on a nearby table, and a monitor beeping rhythmically in the background.
Mariya felt a dull ache all over my body, and a throbbing pain in my head. It was as if I was going to throw up but yet couldn't lift her body to do so.”
So, she lay back down for some minute trying to get herself together.
Confusion washed over her as she tried to recall what had happened.
How she came to be here, who are these people standing in the hospital room speaking in hushed tones.
There was a man sitting anxiously by her bedside. He was already a bit carried away as he was speaking with someone over the phone.
“The doctor said she'll be up in a few minutes. Do hold up the press. I want this to go viral” he said over the phone.
“What is he talking about?” Mariya wondered.
His face was cute but scary. His jaw as sharp as a blade and his long hair, in rich and lustrous shade of brown resting down on his shoulder and his lips a bit chapped as if from cold.
He looked stone cold like an assassin waiting to carry out his duty.
"Hello?" She croaked.
Her voice, weak and raspy.
"Who are you?"
Even her own voice sounded so unfamiliar. How come she can barely recognize anything or anyone, including herself.
The man's eyes widened, and a mix of relief and sadness crossed his face.
He immediately dropped the phone, reached out and took her hand gently in his.
"Carissa, it's me, Alex," he said, his voice trembling.
"Your husband."
She stared blankly at him, searching his face for any shred of recognition, but there was nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
His eyes were breathtaking though, but looking into them? It was as if she was seeing him for the first time in her life.
Her mind was like a white slate, devoid of any form of memories.
“Did he just call me Carissa?”
“I do not even remember that name” Mariya thought in her mind.
And to think that she has a husband that she has absolutely no knowledge about.
“I was married to you?” Mariya asked.
“Yes my love, I am your husband” Alexander responded.
Panic rose within her, and she could feel tears welling up in her eyes.
“Where am I?”
“Obviously it's a hospital room but why am I here?” she asked in shock.
“You don't remember?” Alexander asked. He was happy his plans worked out.
“Do you remember anything at all?” He asked curiously, peering into Mariya’s face or rather new face as if he suspected that she might be lying.
“"I'm sorry, I don't... I don't remember." She replied.
He exchanged what seemed like a thankful glance with another man standing in the hospital room dressed in a perfectly iron suit. Joel.
Judging from the man's body language, Mariya assumed the man to be his personal assistant or bodyguard or employee, just something other than an equal.
Alex's grip on her hand tightened, his voice suddenly filled with emotion, even more calmer than when he had first spoken to her.
"It's okay, Carissa. You've been in an accident. The most important thing is that you are alive”
“You hit your head on a rock and the doctor said you might have amnesia. We're going to get through this together, I promise." He smiled reassuringly.
He was trying everything possible to sound warm and loving but something in Mariya could not just get to trust him.
Tears spilled down her cheeks as she struggled to understand what he was saying.
The thought of not remembering any life she had supposedly built with this man or even the memories they had shared, was even more than overwhelming.
Just then, the door creaked open, and the most gorgeous lady Mariya had ever seen in her entire life.
“Entire life?”
“ I would rather say as much as I remember.” Mariya thought.
She wore a red silky dress that hugged every part of her body down to her knee revealing a tall, slender and perfect hour-glass shape.
Almost the same with Mariya's outfit before the accident, just a bit different.
And she had an equally bright red lipstick, She had the most beautiful hazel eyes. Well now that Mariya had looked into the mirror, their eyes looked just the same.
It's so terrifying how she couldn't even remember her own face while looking in the mirror. It was as if she was existing in another person's body.
And of course she was!
"Carissa, it's me, your sister, Anna," she said softly caressing her arms.
"I know this is a lot to take in, but we're here for you." She said as she gave her a soft peck on her forehead.
Mariya stared at her, a mix of confusion and longing in her eyes.
"Sister?" She whispered, my voice trembling.
"I have a sister too?”
Anna crossed the room and enveloped me in a warm embrace.
“Yes Carissa, I am your elder sister and my name is Anna” she said grinning.
“What about mother?”
“Do I ?”
“I mean do we have a mother?” Carissa asked anxiously.
“Why isn't she here?”
Anna and Alex exchanged a glance. Before she turned to Mariya again.
And suddenly she started shedding tears too.
“We lost our parents when we were much younger, Carissa”
“I raised you all by myself. I am the only relative you have now” she sobbed.
Alex stood up trying to take her away.
“Please don't bother her with that information,” he said.
“It's okay, it's fine, I asked her” Mariya tried to defend.
"It's okay, Carissa. We'll help you remember. We'll take it one step at a time."
The doctor soon entered the room, a clipboard in hand. He introduced himself as Dr. Stevens and began asking her questions. Maybe he was trying to determine the extent of her memory loss.
She felt so bad within her as she struggled to answer even the simplest of questions, her mind was a jumbled mess.
"I'm sorry, I can't remember anything," Mariya admitted, tears stream
