Seven years later, Mariya is now a 20 years old lady. Strong and skillful.
She has risen from the poor little girl brought to St Joseph under the rain to a skilled inmate. Putting in everything she has to learn every skill she needs as a spy and an hired assassin.
Mariya put so much work into developing her strength, because the director told her that was what she needed to do if she wanted to keep her brother alive.
Any simplest act of disloyalty could result in them wasting her brother's life.
According to Marshall, Lucas was sent to a boarding school where he is studying law.
So if training to become Jimmy's best assassin is what it would take Mariya for her brother to live the dream life he desired, she had decided to soak herself into that.
Besides she was going to need this skill one day, to fight against Jimmy and Marshall.
If things go as planned she only have five more years to live here and her brother will graduate from school.
But that is if Marshall and the director will keep to their own end of the agreement.
But unfortunately, they didn't. Lucas never attended any school.
He only learned how to read out a few words from the unskilled staff of St Joseph's orphanage, and this is basically what they teach any kid that Marshall recruited here.
They teach them how to read just enough to be able to recognize signs, symbols and to understand text messages.
Mariya had never set her eyes on her little brother for the past seven years. But she would assume that he has now grown into a very strong teenager. And she had not given up on the dream of liberating her brother from this place.
Because of that zeal, she trained to be better than any other kid in the orphanage. She trained to become the director's favourite.
Maybe by doing this, the Director would pick interest in her and grant her only wish.
This afternoon, after so many pleas. Marshall had accepted to put her on video call with Lucas for the first time in eternity.
"Mariya," Lucas's voice trembled.
He was looking so lean and under fed, just like other kids in St Joseph.
"They are going to kill me. These people... please don't abandon me. Mariya, please save me." The desperation echoed through the crackling video call before Marshall abruptly ended it, leaving Mariya staring at the blank screen in horror.
"You bastard!" Mariya's voice erupted, filled with a mix of anger and fear.
"What did you do to my brother? Where did you take my brother to?" Her voice quivered as tears welled up in her eyes, threatening to spill over.
“You didn't take him to a boarding house like you promised. Where is my brother!” Mariya yelled in anger.
Marshall shifted uncomfortably, his face etched with guilt.
“Your brother is fine, Mariya”
“He's alive at least,” Marshall responded.
“Alive at least?” Mariya asked sarcastically.
“Is that what we agreed on?”
"Mariya, you and I have no choice here" he muttered, his voice barely audible.
“You don't make agreement with director Jimmy, no matter how much agreement you made with him. He is still going to do whatever he has in mind!”
"The director... he forced me to do it." He said lowering his head.
“Your brother is here in St Joseph but you are not allowed to see him. The director locked him up”
St Joseph's was so big, the boys department was so far away from the main building that you needed a car to get there.
Else you trek for as long as God knows when.
Aside from the boys department being so far, the director had trained wolves that guarded the St Joseph's orphanage.
Any kid that tries escaping will just end up in the belly of those merciless wild wolves.
There were hundreds of them, reproducing and living in the woods.
It wasn't advisable for Mariya to go all alone to see her brother.
“No”
“Don't try to play with my emotions”
“You had an option!”
“You could have left me and my brother alone that rainy night. We could have found someone who is genuinely interested in helping us.”
“But no!”
“You chose to introduce us to this horror.”
“And you are here telling me that you and I have no option? Are you kidding me?”
“Now tell me, what else do you want from me?”
“Haven't I done enough already?”
“Why are you guys torturing my brother!” Mariya yelled at them.
“You agreed to send him to school, why is he still in St Joseph?”
Tears streamed down Mariya's face as she stepped closer to Marshall, her voice trembling with a mix of anguish and determination.
"Tell me where they took him. I won't let them hurt him. I won't let them use my brother like they used me!"
Marshall hesitated for a moment, then whispered,
"The director... he wants you to assassinate Alexander Martini, the second contestant for the presidential position in the upcoming election. He says if you don't comply, Lucas will be killed."
Mariya's breath caught in her throat, her heart pounding with a mixture of disbelief and terror.
She had heard of Alexander Martini. Infact, she has had a few encounters with his men in the previous missions she had carried out.
Those people were no jokes. Alexander had the most skilled and tightest security, it would be easy to invade the presidential villa than to attack Alexander Martini.
"Assassinate the Alexander?”
“How?”
“Is that even possible?”
“That's madness! I won't do it. I can't."
“What do I have?”
“You want to set me up for death so that you can freely use my brother as you want?”
“Is that what you want to do to me?”
“Impossible!”
Marshall's voice turned cold, he was done petting Mariya.
She of all people should know that it's impossible to counter Jimmy's instructions.
"You don't understand, Mariya. The director is ruthless. He'll stop at nothing to achieve his goals. If you refuse, Luca will die. And he will still find a way to assassinate Alexander. So this is not about Alexander, it's about the life of your brother!."
Mariya's mind raced rapidly, she was not going to allow Marshall see her vulnerability or they'll use it against her.
The love she has for her brother and the weight of the impossible task before her.
She clenched her fists, her voice filled with defiance.
"There has to be another way. I can't give in to their demands. I haven't gotten my hands dirty enough and I know exactly what the director is trying to do to me”
“Even if I accept to kill him. I am quite sure that Jimmy will want to get rid of me after the operation, just so that Alexander’s men do not trace his death back to the orphanage”
“Either way, you are still going to kill me a do anything you like to my brother.”
“So what’s the need?”
“I won't do it!”
