🌸 Chapter 29. Sparks Unnoticed

558 Words
The mornings in her new home were colder than she expected. The stone floor chilled her bare feet as Xiaoyun rose before dawn, wrapping her thin shawl tighter around her shoulders. Outside, the rooster crowed and mist curled low over the fields. She was surprised to find him already awake. He stood in the yard, splitting firewood with practiced strength. Each swing of the axe was steady, clean, without wasted motion. His breath fogged in the air, his shirt clinging slightly to his back. He looked more like a lone warrior than a farmer. For a moment, Xiaoyun simply watched. She was used to capable men in her past life—politicians, businessmen, scholars—but this man’s strength was different. Quiet. Solid. “Awake?” His voice broke her thoughts. He didn’t look at her, only set the axe aside and stacked the wood neatly. “Yes.” She lowered her gaze quickly, though she caught herself smiling faintly. Life with him was quiet, yet not empty. When she cooked, he would silently fetch water or chop vegetables. When she swept the yard, he mended tools in the corner. They rarely spoke, yet the rhythm of their movements began to fall in sync, like two instruments finding harmony. Once, while she stirred a pot of thin porridge, he set down a small handful of wild mushrooms beside her. “For flavor,” he said simply. She glanced at the gift, warmth flickering in her chest. He hadn’t said much, but the gesture was thoughtful. That evening, as they ate, she noticed he let her have the larger portion again. Without a word, without acknowledgement. Sparks, faint and unnoticed, quietly glimmered in the shadows of their home. The villagers, of course, continued their jeers. “Look at her, living with the cursed man. She must regret it already.” “Who knows if he even speaks to her? What kind of life is that?” Xiaoyun heard them, but instead of anger, she felt an odd calm. They didn’t see the little things she saw. The steady hands that left her work lighter, the silent watchfulness when she walked through the village, the quiet respect in the way he gave her space. They didn’t need to see. She did. One afternoon, as she carried laundry to the stream, her foot slipped on the wet stones. Before she could fall, a strong hand caught her elbow. She looked up—he was there, steadying her. For the briefest second, their eyes met. His grip was firm, protective, but the instant she regained balance, he let go, stepping back as if nothing had happened. “Careful,” he said, turning away. Xiaoyun’s lips curved faintly as she wrung out the wet cloth. He would never say more than necessary, never draw attention to his actions. But she had noticed. Every small spark, every hidden kindness. And though neither spoke it aloud, the air between them was slowly, silently changing. That night, lying on her side beneath the thin quilt, Xiaoyun whispered into the dark, too softly for him to hear: “You may be quiet… but I see you.” And in the stillness, her heart stirred—not yet love, but the beginning of something that even she could no longer ignore. ✨ End of Chapter 29: Sparks Unnoticed
