Chapter Two

Flora's POV: “Oh Moon Goddess, haven’t I suffered enough already?” I muttered under my breath, as I closed the door quietly and walked away. After Bailey and I lost our parents, we promised to hold each other up. And she did. Through the meds, the breakdowns, the cruel taunts from the Elders' wives, and through every failed test. She knew it all. And still… she gave herself to the one man I was breaking myself to keep. You expect betrayal from the world, from your people but not from your own sister. Not from the girl you once shielded with everything you had. I sat on the bed, numb. This was it. The death of a marriage I fought so damn hard to save. But the part that gutted me most? That whisper inside me saying maybe Bailey could give him what I couldn’t. And gods, that made me want to scream. Rip myself apart for being so stupid. So blind. The signs were all there—the lies, the distance, the silence—but I chose not to see them. Because deep down… I believe that I already knew. That he didn't want me anymore, but I wasn’t ready to face it. I flinched as the door opened and Valen walked in. His eyes swept around the room once before landing on me like I was out of place. “Where the hell were you?” He asked sharply. His voice was… different. Not the distance—I had gotten used to that. But this? This coldness? It was new. And it chilled me right through the bone. I watched him emerge minutes later with something in his hand. A thick brown envelope, and my stomach twisted. “We need to talk.” I blurted, my voice cracking more than I wanted it to. “Valen, I—” “I’ll go first,” He interjected. I swallowed hard and nodded. He stepped closer but didn’t sit. He stood like he was giving a briefing. My husband. The man who once used to write me little notes before leaving the house. Now standing like a stranger. Delivering news like a commander in charge. “I can’t do this anymore, Flora,” He started, his gaze avoiding mine. “This… thing between us, whatever it is now. I can't do it anymore.” My lips parted but nothing came out as my heart thudded painfully in my chest. “I’ve tried.” He went on, shrugging slightly like he was trying to convince himself. “I gave it time, and I waited. But I can’t wait anymore. I need an heir. The Pack needs an heir.” He didn’t say I failed. But I heard it loud and clear. He held up the envelope and then tossed it onto the bed beside me. “Those are divorce papers,” He said. “I’ve already signed. You just need to sign and it’s done.” I stared at the envelope. My ears buzzed. I could barely hear him over the sound of my own pulse pounding in my skull. “Is this…” I swallowed. I wanted to ask, Is it because of Bailey? Is this all I was worth to you? But all I could do was look at him—this stranger who used to be my best friend, my protector, my Alpha, my husband. “Why?”I finally muttered. He froze for half a second—just long enough for me to catch the hesitation—but then turned away, ignoring the question completely. “I’ll use the bathroom,” He muttered and walked off like we hadn’t just detonated a bomb in the middle of the room. I sat there. Paralyzed. Tears welled up again, but I held them back. He came out a few minutes later, dressed in his sleepwear, his face unreadable. He climbed into bed without saying a word, turned his back to me, and laid still. Like I didn’t exist. Like I wasn’t once the woman he claimed to love. I stared at the envelope again, fingers trembling as I reached for it. I pressed my lips together to keep from sobbing. Was that it? Was this how it all ended? I looked at him. He was already asleep. Or pretending to be. Breathing slow and steady, like none of this bothered him. And that was when I knew—I couldn’t stay. There was no family left for me in this house. I used to think it was the three of us against the world. Bailey, Valen, and me. Now… I was alone. I bit back the sobs and signed the papers with a hand that wouldn’t stop trembling. Then I grabbed my side bag and stuffed in everything important—my documents, ATM cards, a few rolls of cash, my phone, some clean underwear, and my toiletries. I slipped out the door like a ghost, avoiding every creaky floorboard, every chance of being spotted. The guards didn’t notice me, and I didn’t give them a chance to. When I got to the kitchen, I took one deep breath and slipped out the backdoor. Climbed over some stacked barrels, scaled the fence like I used to as a kid, and dropped quietly on the other side. I moved fast through the woods, heart pounding in my ears. I planned to keep left until I reached the service road that wrapped around the pack’s territory. From there, I’d flag down a cab and vanish into the city. Start over. Somehow. But I forgot. Forgot that rogues scouted these woods, waiting for weak spots in the Pack’s patrol. I didn’t even hear them until it was too late. Four of them, maybe five, dropped out of the trees, snarling. I turned and ran, but they were faster. One caught my bag, yanking me back. I elbowed him, kicked another, my claws almost surfacing—but my wolf was too far inside me. They pinned me down, laughing, teeth flashing— Then suddenly, there was a howl and one rogue went flying into a tree. Another gurgled as a blade sliced across his throat. The third didn’t even get to scream before he was yanked into the dark by a man in a long hooded coat. As soon as the last rogue fell, I scrambled to my feet, grabbed my bag, and turned to run—but my foot caught on a rock. I slipped, cracked my head hard against something sharp—and everything went black. When I opened my eyes again, I was no longer in the woods. The sheets beneath me were silk. The room smelled like cinnamon and smoke. I sat up too fast and winced, hand flying to the side of my head. And then I saw him. A tall man stood by the window, arms folded behind his back. His back was turned to me, so I couldn’t make out his face yet. “Who are you?” I croaked. He turned slowly, and his deep voice filled the room. “The Grim Reaper.” He said.
