"It means the poison triggered something else. I need to examine her more thoroughly."
Hands moved over me again, this time pressing against my chest. The healer went very still.
"My lord, I need to ask. Has this girl ever mentioned problems with her heart?"
"Her heart? No. Why?"
"Because her heartbeat is irregular. Not from the poison, this is something genetic, a defect in the organ itself." The healer's voice dropped. "She was born with this. It's a miracle she's lived this long."
Everything went silent for what felt like eternity, then Warrick's voice cut through the stillness, dangerous and low. "Are you telling me she's been dying this whole time?"
"Not dying exactly, but vulnerable. The poison is attacking that weakness and now her heart can't pump blood properly. S
