chapter 5

"I never imagined you'd be this sort of woman!"  Alpha Aaron finally couldn't hold back any longer, pointing at my retreating figure as he shouted angrily.  I halted in my tracks, turned around, and regarded him calmly.  "What sort of person I am is none of your business, you Beta!"  I paused, then added, enunciating each word deliberately.  "Unless, of course, you come back to speak to me in a different capacity!"  At those final words, Alpha Aaron's expression shifted abruptly.  But in the blink of an eye, he resumed his loyal servant persona.  I couldn't help but admire his acting skills.  "If Luna maintains this attitude, I shall have no choice but to seek the old lady's judgement!"  Having suffered repeated setbacks, he was eager to regain the upper hand.  He glared at me through gritted teeth, refusing to back down.  Or rather, he refused to let Serena suffer the slightest injustice at my hands—not even a verbal one!  In that case, I had nothing left to hold back.  "Do you realise the old lady's wolf spirit has only regained such vigour today because I spent my entire dowry, begged every Healer in the land, and prayed day and night at the Moon Goddess Temple?"  "The wealth I expended ran into millions, and my supplications to the Moon Goddess numbered in the tens of thousands!"  "Were the Old Lady to learn that a mere Beta dared to give me orders, she would punish you—for my sake, for the honour of our entire clan!"  I clenched my teeth, fighting back the tears.  I refuse to believe Alpha Aaron knows nothing of this.  He must have known everything, yet simply didn't care.  At last, Alpha Aaron fell silent.  As I turned to leave, cradling my son, I thought I heard him whisper, "Thank you."  Well, who cares?  Back in the room, I rocked Leo to sleep, then sat by the window, gazing at the cold moonlight outside, pondering all night long.  By dawn, my resolve was set.  I penned a lengthy letter to Aunt Luna of the greatest Silvermoon tribe.  Since Alpha Aaron was so addicted to playing this game, how could I not indulge him?  I wouldn't expose him. I'd play along.  I would make him taste every wound I had endured, every despair I had faced.  He must experience it all!  Over the next few days, Serena did indeed settle down considerably.  But such calm was never meant to last.  That day, the matriarch attended a ladies' gathering at Moonlight Mall, taking most of the household guards and servants with her.  Taking advantage of the estate's emptiness, Serena broke into my back garden.  "Evelyn, do you truly believe Liam is merely a Beta?"  Her face bore an unmistakable look of provocation.  "He bears such a striking resemblance to Alpha Aaron—I don't believe you've never once doubted him!"  I set down my pruning shears and regarded her coolly, puzzled by the sudden boldness in her tone.  "I'll tell you straight: Liam is Alpha Aaron. Alpha Aaron never died in battle! He went into hiding and faked his death—all for me!"  Serena's chin was practically pointing to the heavens.  Seeing my lack of reaction only emboldened her further.  "Do you know why he did it? Because I'm carrying his child!"  "You probably don't know he told me he'd abandon you and your son in a heartbeat for me and this child!"  "If you're half-witted, you'd do well to get the hell out of this estate!"  "Otherwise, once my child is born, you'll be in for a world of hurt!"  Staring at her face twisted with smug satisfaction, I finally couldn't hold back. I raised my hand and, summoning every ounce of strength, delivered a vicious slap across her face.  Now, nothing Alpha Aaron does surprises me.  But I absolutely cannot tolerate this woman parading her arrogance before me!
