chapter 6

Serena stumbled backwards from my slap, clutching her face as she stared at me in disbelief.  Just as I was about to say something more, a furious voice erupted from the side.  "Evelyn, what on earth are you doing?!"  It was Alpha Aaron.  In his haste, he even forgot the respectful title "Luna".  He sprang forward, carefully helping Serena to her feet. His hand pressed anxiously to her stomach as he asked with genuine concern where she hurt.  Serena said nothing, merely burying her face in his chest and weeping uncontrollably, her shoulders heaving pitifully.  Alpha Aaron's eyes brimmed with heartache.  He whipped his head round, his gaze turning to glare at me.  "Evelyn, what a venomous heart you possess!"  "I know our family may have crossed you before, but you should never, ever have laid such a vicious blow on a pregnant woman!"  He looked at me as though I were his sworn enemy.  I felt a bit dazed.  Had the Alpha Aaron of old ever been this agitated over me?  Perhaps his transformation had nothing to do with so-called guilt, nor Serena bearing his child.  He simply no longer loved me, and had fallen for Serena instead.  "Do you truly believe I know nothing?"  I looked at him with disappointment, my voice trembling slightly.  Had I not already resolved to take my revenge, I would have relished repeating Serena's words back to him, word for word!  Alpha Aaron’s expression faltered, clearly betraying his unease.  Serena tugged at his sleeve with feigned vulnerability.  “There’s no need to speak further with her. My stomach is unsettled. Might you accompany me back to rest first?”  Alpha Aaron gritted his teeth, shot me one last furious glare, then carefully supported Serena as they left.  I stood rooted to the spot, speechless for a long while.  The wind swept through, scattering rose petals across the garden floor.  My conviction only deepened: my decision had been the right one.  Come evening, I received a secret message sent by my aunt's messenger.  Everything had been arranged.  I cast one final glance at the estate where I had lived for five years. It held my sweetest memories, yet now only the bitterest betrayal remained.  Without a moment's hesitation, I resolutely departed with my son.  Yet, before boarding the carriage, I unexpectedly encountered Alpha Aaron.  "Where are you off to, Luna?" he blocked my path.  "To Full Moon Hospital for a dinner reception," I replied, my expression impassive.  He seemed to detect nothing amiss, merely bowing to let me pass.  "Do take care, Luna. And about that earlier... I was quite out of line shouting at you..."  He seemed to be seizing the opportunity to apologise.  But I had no inclination to listen to him. I simply instructed the driver to proceed.  As the car swept past him, I caught sight of his frozen figure in the rear-view mirror. A cold smile touched my lips.  Alpha Aaron, watch closely.  This is merely the beginning of the surprises I have in store for you.  That evening, when the old lady returned from the gathering, she found me nowhere to be seen.  "Where on earth has Evelyn gone? I'm not aware she had any dinner engagements to attend?"  "If there truly was a dinner, how could she have bypassed me to invite her directly?"  The old lady banged her fist on the drawing room table, furious.  The entire estate fell deathly silent, not a soul daring to utter a word.  Alpha Aaron frowned deeply—after all, I had slipped away right under his watchful eye, and he hadn't suspected a thing!  Serena offered gentle reassurance from the sidelines.  "Do not fret so, Madam. Perhaps Luna merely went out to clear her head? She may return in due course."  "In a few days?" The matriarch's expression darkened instantly.  "This shows utter disregard for the honour of my Aaron household! Does she not realise how other wolf clans will judge her for spending the night away at this critical juncture?"  "If malicious rumours spread, what becomes of my son's reputation?"  "Dispatch someone at once to retrieve her! Should she persist in such wilful behaviour, she shall no longer bear the name Luna. I shall immediately petition the Elders' Council to revoke her status!"  The old lady was thoroughly enraged and immediately dispatched her servants to search for me.  Alpha Aaron’s expression darkened noticeably.  When he heard his mother actually speak of stripping Luna of her title, it felt as though a sharp thorn had pierced his heart. The pain was stifling, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't pull it out.
