CHAPTER 5: THE SCANDAL

1320 Words
Morning light poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass of the penthouse, casting long golden strips across the dark hardwood floors. Lyra woke up in the oversized master bed, wrapped in the crisp white cotton of one of Rowan’s dress shirts. The fabric hung loose over her frame, the hem reaching her mid-thigh, carrying his subtle scent of sandalwood and rain. Her chest felt tight with a sudden, sharp wave of vulnerability. Last night had broken something inside her. She had let her CEO mask fall. She had let him hold her while she cried, and worst of all, she had let herself believe, even for a few seconds, that she didn't have to carry the weight of her world alone. She swung her legs out of bed, pulling the shirt buttons closed as her feet hit the cool floor. She needed her suit. She needed her armor. Following the faint scent of fresh coffee, Lyra walked down the high-ceilinged hallway toward the far wing of the penthouse. Double doors stood half-open, revealing Rowan’s private art studio. The space was massive, bathed in north-facing morning light, scattered with wooden easels, tubes of oil paint, and heavy canvases. Rowan stood near the center of the room, stripped down to a dark grey t-shirt and low-slung black trousers. Paint smudges lined his jaw, and his dark hair was slightly messy. He was working on a massive canvas resting on the central easel. Lyra stopped in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat. It was a painting of her. The oil was still wet, rich with deep obsidian tones and soft candlelight highlights. It depicted a woman from behind, her shoulders bare, the intricate dark trail of ink running down the pale skin of her spine rendered with astonishing, breath-taking detail. The raw emotion carved into the canvas wasn't just artistic admiration; it was pure, terrifying obsession. He had captured every line of her back, every curve of her waist, with the hand of a man who had memorized her in the dark. Rowan didn't turn around, but his voice broke the quiet room, deep and gravelly from sleep. "You're awake early, Ly." Lyra swallowed hard, stepping into the studio, her eyes locked on the painting. "Rowan... when did you paint this?" "Last night," Rowan said softly, setting his brush down on the wooden tray. He turned slowly, his dark brown eyes sweeping over her bare legs, taking in the sight of her swallowed up in his shirt. The heat in his gaze was instantaneous, possessive, and thick with unspoken longing. "After you fell asleep." "This is..." Her voice trailed off. She felt stripped bare, completely exposed in a way no corporate board could ever achieve. "You shouldn't have painted this." Rowan closed the distance between them with slow, deliberate steps until he stood directly in front of her. He reached out, his warm thumb gently catching her chin, tilting her face up to meet his gaze. "I've been painting you in my head for ten years, Ly," he murmured, his voice dropping into a rough purr. "You can hide from the rest of the world, but you can't hide from me." Before she could process the raw weight of his confession, the sharp, piercing ring of her phone shattered the intimate quiet. Lyra pulled away, grabbing her phone from the nearby marble counter. The screen was lit up with forty-seven missed calls and dozens of frantic text notifications from her executive assistant, Maya. She answered, pressing the phone to her ear. "Maya? What's going on?" "Miss Shaw!" Maya’s voice was borderline hysterical, trembling through the speaker. "Turn on the news! It's everywhere! The Croft board... Zephyr Croft just held an emergency press conference ten minutes ago!" Lyra tapped her phone screen, pulling up the live national news feed. Rowan stepped up behind her, his chest pressing against her back as his eyes locked onto the glowing display. On the screen stood Zephyr Croft, dressed in a sharp grey suit, standing before a wall of press microphones outside the Croft Corporate Headquarters. Beside him stood Isolde Croft, looking frail, solemn, and deeply mournful. "It is with a heavy heart that the Croft family must address recent private developments," Zephyr’s voice echoed through the speaker, smooth and venomous. "While my brother, Rowan Croft, made a sudden personal decision to enter a civil arrangement with Lyra Shaw, recent evidence brought to our board indicates grave financial irregularities." The news anchor cut in, displaying a series of high-resolution leaked documents and graining photos on the screen. "Breaking news," the reporter announced. "Leaked internal records from Shaw Global allege that Lyra Shaw funneled over forty million dollars in offshore investor capital to fund her convicted father’s illegal overseas accounts prior to her marriage arrangement with the Croft estate. Sources within the Croft board confirm an immediate motion has been filed to freeze all Shaw Global assets, nullify the civil union on grounds of corporate fraud, and remove Miss Shaw from her executive post effective immediately." The phone slid from Lyra’s numb fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor. Her stomach plummeted into a cold, dark abyss. It was a complete frame-job. Zephyr had taken old financial transfers from her father's liquidations five years ago, doctored the offshore routing tags, and tied them directly to her personal accounts. It was calculated to ruin her reputation, destroy her company, and legally void her marriage to Rowan in one swift, ruthless stroke. "They ruined me," Lyra whispered, her voice barely audible as her vision blurred with cold shock. "They did it in front of the entire country." Rowan didn't say a word. The silence radiating off him turned deadly. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a pitch-black, suffocating fury that made the air in the room feel thin. He bent down, picked up her phone, and tapped a single contact on speed dial. "Gabriel," Rowan said into the phone, his voice flat, emotionless, and terrifyingly calm. "Activate the nuclear protocol on the Croft holding firm. Liquidate my sixty percent private voting shares in the main estate by noon. Dump the shares on the open market. I want my family's stock price in the dirt before the bell rings." Lyra gasped, turning to look at him in shock. "Rowan, no! That will destroy your family's entire net worth! You'll lose your own inheritance!" Rowan ended the call, tossing the phone onto the table. He grabbed Lyra by the waist, pulling her flush against his chest, his dark eyes burning with an unholy, possessive fire. "I don't give a damn about the inheritance," Rowan growled low in his throat, his face inches from hers. "They declared war on my wife. I am going to burn the Croft empire to the ground and hand you the ashes." Before Lyra could speak, the private elevator behind them let out a sharp ding. The heavy chrome doors slid open. Stepping out into the penthouse foyer was not Zephyr, nor the police. It was Isabelle Freeman. Dressed in a rain-soaked coat, her face pale as a ghost, tears streaming down her cheeks. In her shaking hands, she held a thick white medical envelope stamped with the crest of the city's most exclusive private hospital. "Rowan..." Isabelle sobbed, her voice breaking the tense room like glass shattering. "You can't sell your shares. You can't stay with her." Rowan didn't release his grip on Lyra’s waist, stepping forward with Lyra anchored against his side. "Get out of my house, Isabelle, before I have security throw you into the street." Isabelle pulled a sheaf of medical papers from the envelope, holding them out with trembling fingers, her eyes locking onto Rowan with a desperate, hysterical look. "I'm one month pregnant, Rowan!" Isabelle screamed, the sound echoing off the high ceilings. "It's yours! I'm carrying the next Croft heir—and your mother is filing for full emergency custody today!"
