The air inside the Ash-Sunk Rift tasted like sulfur and boiled copper. Lin Feng wiped a layer of black grease from his forehead, his knuckles scraping against the edge of his leather tunic. Below the basalt ledge, the primeval fire spirit pulsed in the belly of the cavern, a restless mass of white-hot plasma that looked less like flame and more like a beating, liquid heart.
"The structural integrity of this shelf is trash, Emperor," General Zhang Wei said, his heavy armor clanking as he kicked a loose piece of shale into the abyss. "We shouldn't be here. The scouts reported Iron Kingdom movement three leagues north. If they trap us in this throat, we choke."
Lin Feng didn't look back. His eyes were locked on the white core below, the numbers in his mind ticking down with an agonizing, silent rhythm. "We have six hours before the alignment shifts, Zhang Wei. If I don't anchor this spirit into my meridians before the solar peak, the heat will liquefy my lungs instead of refining them. We stay."
"You are risking the command of the entire army for a rumor of raw power," Zhang Wei muttered, his thick fingers tightening around the pommel of his broadsword. "The men are nervous. They think you are chasing ghosts because the crown went to your head."
"Let them think I am mad," Lin Feng said, stepping closer to the drop. "Madness is easier to march behind than the truth."
"My sect spent three generations trying to seal this pit," Meng Yao said, her voice cutting through the heat from the shadows of the tunnel entrance. She stepped forward, her white robes already stained with soot at the hem. "You enter the rift without the proper ice-vein pills, Lin Feng. You will burn from the inside out. My people did not surrender their mountains just to watch their new sovereign turn to ash in a ditch."
Lin Feng glanced at her, noting the slight tremor in her left hand. She still carried the frost-blade of the Northern Peaks, and she still looked at him like he was an infection that needed curing. "Your people surrendered because they recognized a dead end when they saw one, Sect Leader. Now, keep the perimeter clear. The absorption sequence requires absolute focus."
"Focus won't save you if the magma vents pop," Meng Yao retorted, crossing her arms. "You don't know the temper of this valley."
Before Lin Feng could reply, the cavern roof groaned. A shower of sharp obsidian needles rained down, clattering against Zhang Wei’s iron pauldrons. The low, rhythmic hum of the fire spirit shifted into a high-pitched screech.
"That wasn't a vent," Zhang Wei roared, drawing his blade with a harsh metallic ring. "Defensive circle! Now!"
From the upper ledges, heavy iron-reinforced nets tumbled through the smog, pinning two of Lin Feng’s vanguard elite against the rock face. A dozen figures emerged from the shadows of the upper tunnels, their armor lacquered in the dark red of the neighboring Iron Kingdom. At their center stood Prince Cao, his lips pulled back in a thin, joyless smirk.
"The mad king of the central plains," Cao shouted, his voice echoing off the stone vaults. "Conquering kingdoms in a rush, executing your own blood, and for what? To crawl into a furnace like a rat?"
"Cao," Zhang Wei spat, stepping in front of Lin Feng. "You crossed the border without a declaration of war. Your father will hang for this."
"My father will rule the ruins of your palace by next week," Cao said, waving his hand toward the tunnel supports above them. "You brought no siege engines, Lin Feng. You brought no supply lines. You ran straight into a hole. Roll the charges!"
With a series of dull thuds, heavy black-powder barrels rolled from the upper paths, wedging into the natural fault lines of the cavern walls. The fuses were already sputtering with green sparks.
"He's going to drop the ceiling," Meng Yao said, her fingers already spinning a defensive frost ward. The blue light flickered weakly against the oppressive heat. "Lin Feng, we have to retreat through the lower flues. Now!"
"There is no retreat," Lin Feng said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm register. He looked at the white fire spirit below, then at the sputtering fuses above. "If the exit collapses, the heat will triple. The alignment will accelerate."
"Are you listening to me?" Meng Yao screamed, her composure breaking as she grabbed his shoulder. Her fingers were freezing, a desperate contrast to the air. "We will be buried alive! You cannot fight an entire mountain!"
"Watch the tunnels," Lin Feng said, twisting out of her grip. "Keep them off the ledge for three minutes."
"Three minutes?" Zhang Wei bellowed, parrying a thrown iron javelin that sparked off his shield. "Sire, that's suicide!"
"That's an order, General!" Lin Feng shouted. He didn't wait for a response. He leaned over the edge and dropped straight into the white-hot pit.
"Lin Feng!" Meng Yao lunged forward, but the first explosion tore through the upper gallery. The rock beneath her feet buckled, throwing her backward into the dust. A massive boulder cracked loose from the ceiling, smashing into the main exit path with a deafening roar.
Above them, Prince Cao laughed, the sound muffled by the cascading debris. "Seal the throat! Let the emperor have his fire! Let him rule the dirt!"
Down in the basin, Lin Feng hit the basalt floor on a knee, the impact jarring his teeth. The heat was a physical wall, pressing into his chest until his skin began to blister through his clothes. The white plasma of the spirit swirled around him, drawn to the silver lattice map burning inside his soul. The countdown clock in his mind suddenly skipped, the numbers spinning wildly as the external pressure mounted.
He opened his mouth, but instead of a breath, he drew the raw, unrefined essence of the spirit directly into his throat. It tasted like liquid lightning. His meridians tore open, the spiritual channels in his arms splitting under the volume of the influx. He could feel his own pulse failing, his mortal heart stuttering against the sheer velocity of the power.
"Too early," he hissed to himself, his vision turning entirely white as the cavern around him began to collapse in earnest. "The universe doesn't wait."
On the upper ledge, Zhang Wei was covered in gray soot, his sword notched as he drove back two iron kingdom scouts who had scrambled down the scree. "Meng Yao! The frost wall is failing! We're losing the ceiling!"
"I'm trying!" she yelled, her face pale, blood dripping from her nose as she sustained the blue barrier against the falling weight of the mountain. "The heat from below is burning through the arrays! He’s drawing too much!"
Another massive explosion shook the rift. The entire upper shelf collapsed, burying the tunnel mouth completely. A wall of solid rock fell between them and the outside world, sealing the cavern in total, suffocating darkness, lit only by the dying glow of the pit.
Prince Cao’s men cheered from the remaining upper pockets, thinking the job was done. "He’s gone! Clear the remaining guards!"
Down in the white crater, the silence lasted for only a heartbeat.
The pressure didn't burst Lin Feng's core; it fused it. The silver lines of the star map absorbed the white flame, turning the destructive heat into a dense, pressurized engine of pure Qi.
Lin Feng rose from the smoke. His boots had melted away, his bare feet leaving blackened prints on the boiling stone. He looked up at the scouts through the falling dust. The air around him didn't shimmer with heat anymore; it froze into white static, the sheer density of his new cultivation level suppressing the very physics of the cave.
He turned his head toward the upper ledges where Cao’s remaining ambushers stood frozen. His eyes were no longer brown; they burned with a steady, blinding white fire that cast no shadows.
"You missed the deadline," Lin Feng said, his voice carrying the weight of a grinding mountain as he looked up at them with a terrifying, broken grin.
