The next morning, Maya arrived at Vale Enterprises for the project presentation.
She had spent the entire night preparing.
She was determined to prove that she belonged in the room.
Even if the billionaire from yesterday was sitting across the table.
She entered the conference room.
And stopped.
Adrian was already there.
Black suit.
White shirt.
That same unreadable expression.
Their eyes met.
For one brief second, neither spoke.
Then Adrian leaned back in his chair.
“Ms. Carter.”
Maya straightened.
“Mr. Vale.”
His lips twitched.
“Still blaming me for the coffee?”
“Still wearing expensive suits?”
A few people around the table exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Adrian, however, smiled.
“Let’s begin.”
The presentation went better than Maya expected.
She spoke confidently about the design, sustainability, and the vision behind the building.
Adrian asked difficult questions.
Maya answered every one.
Finally, he closed the folder.
“I want her firm.”
Maya blinked.
“You’ve chosen us?”
“I have.”
She smiled.
“Thank you.”
Adrian’s gaze remained on her.
“There’s one condition.”
Her smile faded slightly.
“What condition?”
“You work directly with me.”
The room became silent.
Maya stared at him.
“Excuse me?”
“You’ll report directly to me throughout the project.”
“Why?”
Adrian leaned forward.
“Because I don’t trust people easily.”
Maya crossed her arms.
“And you trust me?”
“No.”
His answer caught her completely off guard.
“I don’t.”
He stood.
“But I’d like to.”
Maya didn’t know what to say.
Then her phone vibrated inside her bag.
She glanced down.
A new message.
I warned you.
Her blood ran cold.
She looked up at Adrian.
He noticed her expression immediately.
“What happened?”
Maya slowly put the phone away.
“Nothing.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
He knew she was lying.
And somehow, he already knew that whatever was happening to her was connected to him.
