Chapter 2: The Message

281 Words
Maya watched the black SUV disappear into the rain. She should have forgotten him. That was what sensible people did after embarrassing themselves in front of a billionaire. Unfortunately, Maya had never been particularly good at doing what was sensible. She walked into the architectural firm where she worked, shook the rain from her coat, and tried to focus on the presentation waiting for her. But Adrian Vale’s face kept appearing in her mind. His voice. His strange smile. And those three words he’d read from his phone. We found him. Who was him? Maya shook her head. “Stop being curious,” she whispered to herself. “Talking to yourself again?” Maya turned. Her best friend, Elena, stood behind her with two coffees. “I wasn’t talking to myself.” “You absolutely were.” Maya took the coffee. “I met someone.” Elena’s eyebrows rose immediately. “Someone?” “A man.” “A man?” “Yes, Elena. A man. That’s generally how it works.” “Is he handsome?” Maya hesitated. “Unfortunately.” Elena laughed. “Oh, this is going to be good.” Before Maya could answer, her phone buzzed. Unknown number. She frowned and opened the message. You shouldn’t have spoken to Adrian Vale. Her smile disappeared. Another message arrived. Stay away from him. Maya stared at the screen. “Who is it?” Elena asked. “I don’t know.” A third message appeared. This is your only warning. Maya’s fingers tightened around the phone. She looked toward the rain-covered windows. For the first time that morning, she wondered if meeting Adrian Vale hadn’t been an accident after all.
