Chapter 10 – Learning to Fight The forest was quiet. Too quiet. Amara stood in the middle of a small clearing, her breathing steady but her thoughts anything but calm. The events of the past few days replayed in her mind like a broken record—her escape, the chase, the betrayal, and now… The truth. She wasn’t just running anymore. She was being hunted. And worse— She was being *claimed*. Daniel stood a few feet away, watching her carefully. “Again,” he said. Amara exhaled sharply. “We’ve been doing this for an hour.” “And you’re still hesitating,” he replied. Her jaw tightened. “I’m not a fighter, Daniel.” “No,” he said. “But you’re a target. And targets don’t survive long unless they learn fast.” That hit harder than she expected. Amara straightened, forcing herself to focus. “Fine,” she said. “Again.” Daniel stepped closer, his movements controlled and deliberate. “Rule one,” he began. “Don’t wait.” Before she could react— He lunged. Amara gasped, instinctively stepping back, but he caught her wrist, twisting it gently—but firmly—forcing her off balance. “Too slow,” he said. “I didn’t even—!” “Exactly.” He released her. “Out there,” he continued, his voice calm but firm, “no one’s going to give you time to think. You act—or you lose.” Amara clenched her fists. Frustration burned in her chest. “Then stop holding back,” she snapped. Daniel paused. His eyes studied her. “You sure about that?” Amara lifted her chin. “Yes.” A beat. Then— “Alright.” This time, when he moved— It was faster. Sharper. Real. Amara barely had time to react before she felt his presence behind her. She spun, heart racing, swinging her arm instinctively. Daniel caught it. But— Not completely. Her movement had been unpredictable. Messy. But enough. A small shift. A small improvement. Daniel stepped back, a flicker of approval in his eyes. “Better.” Amara blinked. “You mean that?” “Yes.” A small, unexpected smile tugged at her lips. But it didn’t last long. Because reality came rushing back. “This isn’t enough,” she said quietly. “They have weapons. Training. Resources.” Daniel nodded. “They do.” “And we have what? A broken truck and a forest?” He stepped closer. “We have something they don’t.” Amara frowned. “What?” “You,” he said. She let out a soft scoff. “That’s not reassuring.” “It should be,” Daniel replied. “Because you’re not who they think you are anymore.” Amara stilled. The words settled deep. Not who they think you are anymore. For a moment, she believed it. Then— A sound. Distant. Faint. But unmistakable. An engine. Daniel’s head snapped toward the direction of the noise. Amara’s heart dropped. “No…” “They found us,” she whispered. Daniel’s expression darkened. “Too soon.” The engine grew louder. Closer. “They shouldn’t be able to track us this fast,” Amara said. Daniel didn’t respond. And that— That terrified her. “What?” she demanded. “What is it?” He looked at her. Something cold settling in his gaze. “We’ve been compromised.” Her stomach twisted. “How?” Daniel’s eyes flicked briefly to her bag. Amara froze. “No…” She grabbed it, quickly opening it, her hands shaking. Everything looked normal. Clothes. Documents. The key. The note— Wait. Her fingers stopped. There. At the bottom. Something small. Metal. Barely noticeable. Her breath caught. “A tracker…” she whispered. Daniel nodded once. “They planted it.” Her mind raced. “When?” “At the docks,” he said. “Or earlier.” Amara’s chest tightened painfully. Mila. The betrayal cut deeper now. “She made sure they’d always find us,” Amara said. Daniel’s jaw clenched. “Yeah.” The engine roared louder. Too close now. “Throw it,” Daniel said. Amara didn’t hesitate. She hurled the tracker as far as she could into the trees. But Daniel was already shaking his head. “It’s too late.” The vehicle burst into view moments later. Not one. Two. Amara’s pulse spiked. “They’re here!” “Stay behind me,” Daniel said. But Amara didn’t move. Not this time. “No.” He looked at her. “What?” “I’m not hiding anymore,” she said. Before he could argue— The doors of the vehicles opened. Men stepped out. Armed. Calculated. And then— Another figure emerged. Slow. Controlled. Familiar. Amara’s breath caught. “No…” It wasn’t just anyone. It was— Sebastian Cortez. Her supposed fiancé. The man she ran from. The man who was supposed to own her future. He adjusted his cuffs calmly, as if this was just another business meeting. “Well,” he said smoothly. “That was more difficult than expected.” Amara felt her entire body go cold. “You…” she whispered. Sebastian’s gaze locked onto hers. And for a moment— He smiled. But there was no warmth in it. “Hello, Amara.” Daniel stepped forward slightly. Shielding her. Sebastian’s eyes flicked to him. Ah. Recognition. “So,” Sebastian said, tilting his head slightly. “You’re the problem.” Daniel didn’t respond. But the tension between them was immediate. Sharp. Dangerous. Sebastian chuckled softly. “I was told you might interfere,” he said. “Didn’t think you’d last this long.” Amara’s heart pounded. “You’re not taking me,” she said, her voice steadier than she felt. Sebastian looked back at her. Amused. “Oh, Amara,” he said. “This was never a request.” Her fists clenched. “I’m not part of your deal.” Sebastian’s smile faded slightly. “No,” he said. “You are the deal.” Silence. Heavy. Toxic. Daniel stepped forward. “She’s not going with you.” Sebastian raised an eyebrow. “And you think you can stop me?” Daniel’s stance shifted. Ready. “Try me.” A pause. Then— Sebastian sighed. “Unfortunate.” He raised his hand slightly. And just like that— The men moved. Fast. Precise. This wasn’t like before. This was organized. Strategic. Daniel reacted instantly, pulling Amara back as the first attack came. “Stay with me!” he ordered. This time— She did. But she didn’t freeze. Didn’t panic. She moved. Remembering. Reacting. Fighting. Not perfectly. Not cleanly. But enough. Enough to survive. Enough to prove— She wasn’t the same person anymore. The clearing turned into chaos. Movement. Strikes. Shouts. Adrenaline. At one point, a man lunged toward her— And Amara reacted. Fast. She dodged. Grabbed. Turned. Just like Daniel taught her. The man hit the ground hard. She froze for half a second. Stunned. “I did that…” she whispered. “Focus!” Daniel snapped. Right. Focus. But even as they fought— Something felt wrong. Off. Because Sebastian— Wasn’t moving. He stood there. Watching. Calm. Observing. Like he already knew how this would end. And that— That scared Amara more than anything. Because it meant— This wasn’t the real attack. This was just— The beginning.
