CHAPTER FOUR
Elara spent the next two days pretending Riven didn’t exist.
It was surprisingly difficult.
Not because she wanted him.
She absolutely did not.
At least, that’s what she told herself.
The problem was that everywhere she went, she felt him.
In the lecture hall.
Across the cafeteria.
Outside the library.
She would turn around and find his eyes on her.
Then he’d look away.
It was infuriating.
“You need to stop looking at him.”
Nia dropped into the seat beside her.
“I wasn’t.”
“You were.”
“I was looking at the door.”
“The door is behind him.”
Elara sighed.
Nia noticed the edge of the silver mark beneath Elara’s shirt.
“Is that still there?”
Elara touched it.
“Yes.”
“Does it hurt?”
“Sometimes.”
“Have you seen a doctor?”
“Not for this.”
“Why?”
“Because what am I supposed to say?”
Nia lowered her voice.
“I don’t know. Maybe ‘Doctor, a psychopath rejected me and now I have a glowing scar.’”
Elara laughed despite herself.
It was the first time she’d laughed in days.
Then the laughter disappeared.
Across the cafeteria, Riven was staring at them.
His expression was unreadable.
Elara looked away.
But she felt something.
A strange pull.
Almost like a thread connecting them.
Then pain struck her chest.
She gasped.
At the same moment, Riven doubled over.
Everyone around him looked confused.
Elara stood.
Riven looked up.
Their eyes met.
And for one terrifying moment, Elara heard his voice inside her head.
Don’t come near me.
She froze.
That wasn’t sound.
It was inside her.
She whispered:
“Riven?”
His eyes widened.
He heard her.
Inside his head.
How?
Elara stepped backward.
Nia grabbed her arm.
“What happened?”
“I don’t know.”
Riven disappeared from the cafeteria.
⸻
That evening, Elara stood in front of the bathroom mirror.
She lifted her shirt slightly.
The silver mark had changed.
It wasn’t just a crescent anymore.
Tiny lines had appeared around it.
Like branches.
Like veins.
Like something growing.
She touched it.
A flash of memory hit her.
A little boy.
Black hair.
Golden eyes.
His hand holding hers.
He was smiling.
“Don’t be scared, Ellie.”
Elara’s breath caught.
Ellie.
Nobody called her that.
Not anymore.
Her mother used to.
Before she stopped.
Elara stumbled backward.
Another memory.
A forest.
Blood on snow.
Her mother screaming.
Then a man’s voice:
“Take the girl.”
Elara screamed.
The bathroom mirror cracked.
She stared at it.
Her reflection stared back.
But her eyes weren’t brown anymore.
For one brief second…
They were silver.
⸻
Across the city, Riven woke from sleep with a start.
His chest burned.
He could feel Elara’s fear.
Her confusion.
Her memories.
His wolf was pacing inside him.
She’s remembering.
Riven sat up.
“No.”
His phone rang.
Seraphine.
He answered.
“What’s wrong?”
Her voice was low.
“Father knows.”
Riven’s blood went cold.
“Knows what?”
“Everything.”
A pause.
“Riven…”
“What?”
Seraphine whispered:
“He knows she’s Moonborn.”
